Robert Pattinson films making Most Anticipated Lists

It’s that time of year when we all start to consider what films we want to see in 2019.  The Playlist included four of Rob’s films in their “100 Most Anticipated Films for 2019“.  I love that we have 4 upcoming films to look forward to – Rob’s been pretty busy.

12. “The Lighthouse”
Director: Robert Eggers (“The Witch”)
Cast: Robert Pattinson, Willem Dafoe
Synopsis: A pair of lighthouse keepers in early 20th century Maine encounter strange forces from the sea.
What You Need To Know: Even by the standards of the brilliant debut horror films that have arrived in recent years, “The Witch” might have been a highlight: a genuinely singular and unnerving film that marked big things for director Robert Eggers. It’s taken a minute for him to follow it up (he’d been developing a “Nosferatu” remake, among other things), but Eggers finally filmed this follow up last year, with the tantalizing lead duo of Pattinson and Dafoe. It’s very much under wraps, but the film is apparently in black-and-white, and is “a fantasy horror story set in the world of old sea-faring myths,” which makes us think that either Dafoe or R-Patz are gonna bang a merman.
Release Date: Not at Sundance, so it’ll probably be TIFF at this point. A24 have the rights, anyway.

24. “The King”
Director: David Miçhod (“Animal Kingdom”)
Cast: Timothee Chalamet, Joel Edgerton, Robert Pattinson, Ben Mendelsohn, Lily Rose-Depp
Synopsis: The journey of young Prince Hal from rebellious upstart to the King of England.
What You Need To Know: After an incredibly promising start to his career with “Animal Kingdom” and the somewhat underrated “The Rover,” Australian filmmaker David Michod came a little bit unstuck with high-profile Brad Pitt Netflix movie “War Machine,” a messy, if not uninteresting, film that came and went without much attention. He’s not scaling back his ambitions for his follow-up, also with Netflix: it’s an adaptation (co-written with pal Joel Edgerton, who also stars as Falstaff) of three of Shakespeare’s most famous History plays. Not only that, but it’s also tackling the same territory as Orson Welles did with “Chimes At Midnight,” arguably the greatest ever Shakespeare movie. It’s unclear whether the drama will stick with the language of the original plays, but we’re very intrigued to see what spin this puts on a well-worn story.
Release Date: Filmed last summer, so this could bow at Cannes, as “The Rover” did.

29. “Waiting For The Barbarians”
Director: Ciro Guerra (“Embrace Of The Serpent”)
Cast: Mark Rylance, Robert Pattinson, Joe Alwyn, Harry Melling, Johnny Depp
Synopsis: A magistrate in colonial town clashes with a colonel who is intent on capturing local indigenous people.
What You Need To Know: Colombian filmmaker Ciro Guerra has already made one of 2019’s best films: the thrilling, gorgeous crime drama “Birds Of Passage,” which debuted at Cannes last year but won’t actually open until 2019 in the U.S. Could he have another one on the way? Guerra’s making his English-language debut with this adaptation of J.M. Coetzee’s novel, a passion-project of Mark Rylance, who takes the lead role. It’s very much in Guerra’s post-colonial wheelhouse, and there’s an impressive cast of rising stars including Robert Pattinson (who’s now something of a mark of quality), but it’s hard not to have your enthusiasm dampened by the presence of Johnny Depp in the villainous role. Hopefully, he’s taken the Grindelwald eyebrows off, at least.
Release Date: Started filming recently, so expect it towards the end of the year — hopefully Venice.

41. “The Devil All The Time”
Director: Antonio Campos (“Christine”)
Cast: Chris Evans, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Mia Wasikowska, Mia Goth
Synopsis: A man tries to save his wife in an Ohio town, where the inhabitants include a pair of serial killers, a corrupt sheriff and a preacher losing his faith.
What You Need To Know: Of all the filmmakers to emerge out of the Borderline Films mini-movement, Antonio Campos is perhaps the one who’s seemed the most likely to cross over to the mainstream. Although his films like “Afterschool” and “Simon Killer” are tough watches, he’s also shown a willingness to play in other people’s sandboxes: he directed the pilot of “The Sinner” and an episode of “The Punisher,” and is developing a prequel to “The Omen” with Fox. His latest film looks to meld the best of both worlds though: an adaptation of Donald Ray Pollock’s Midwest gothic novel, but with one of the most impressive casts of the year (including Chris Evans seemingly looking to throw off that Captain America good-guy image). Campos hasn’t made a truly great film yet, but this could well turn out to be the one.
Release Date: Shoots in February, so hopefully we’ll see it before the year is out.

No. 48 is The Souvenir Part 1 which gives an honourable mention to Rob although it incorrectly says he’s only part of Part 1 which clearly is  a typo as we know they mean Part 2.

48. “The Souvenir”
Director: Joanna Hogg (“Archipelago”)
Cast: Chyna Terrelonge-Vaughan, Ariana Labed, Tilda Swinton, Tom Burke, Richard Ayoade
Synopsis: In the early 1980s, a film student begins a relationship with an older, untrustworthy man.
What You Need To Know: Despite being responsible in large part for discovering Tom Hiddleston(who made his debut in her debut “Unrelated,” and has appeared in her subsequent two films too), Joanna Hogg’s utterly distinctive arthouse dramas remain something of an acquired taste. But her latest — the first in a two-part, semi-autobiographical story, the second of which will follow in 2019 — could be the one to break her out wider. For one, Martin Scorsese, an avowed fan of her work, is executive producing the movie, for another, it has her most high-profile cast to date, including the currently-on-a-roll Robert Pattinson (though we’ve heard he might appear only in the first part, and isn’t in the cast listing for Sundance which adds up).
Release Date: Sundance.

Robert Pattinson’s Upcoming Projects

 

I tweeted today that The King has finally been removed from Rob’s IMDbPro page.  It’s not a surprise to me because I believe Justin Kroll when he said that Rob wasn’t involved given he had the exclusive on Joel Edgerton.  IMDb | IMDbPro isn’t 100% accurate at the best of times, but I thought I’d take this opportunity to reflect on the projects in development currently listed on Rob’s page:

The Lighthouse (Robert Eggers)

Robert Pattinson said he was excited about his next project and “excited to be in a horror movie by Robert Eggers.”

Rob is currently in Nova Scotia with William Dafoe.  The film is currently in pre-production and filming is rumoured to commence on Monday 9 April 2018 and scheduled to finish around 11 May 2018.  We also know they have finalised the building of the lighthouse (see pic above) and the roads are now closed off from the general public.  It’s currently slated to be released in 2019.

The Souvenir: Part 2 (Joanna Hogg)

Not much is known about The Souvenir: Part 2 other than filming is supposed to start in the summer of this year and that Rob will have a leading role.  Part 1 is currently post production as at 22 October 2017, but we should know next Thursday (12 April 2018) if it is in fact going to Cannes as has been rumoured.

Claire Denis’ Let the Sunshine In hasn’t reached UK cinemas and yet we’re already due her follow-film High Life, featuring Denis regular Juliette Binoche alongside Robert Pattinson and Mia Goth. In the film, a group of skilled criminals, in a bid to escape their long sentences or capital punishment, accept a likely-fatal government space mission to find alternative energy sources. Denis does high concept sci-fi? Count us in.

6. “High Life”
Director: Claire Denis (“Let The Sun Shine In”)
Cast: Robert Pattinson, Juliette Binoche, Mia Goth, Andre Benjamin, Agata Buzek
Synopsis: A group of convicts are used as reproductive experiments against their will by scientists.
What You Need To Know: The great French helmer Claire Denis’s first foray into sci-fi territory (with a script by the great novelist Zadie Smith and her poet husband Nick Laird) first made our list two years ago when it seemed on the verge of shooting, but it didn’t happen for one reason or another, and when she shifted to this year’s Juliette Binoche-starrer “Let The Sun Shine In,” we worried that “High Life” was dead. Fortunately, filming finally got underway last year, with the long-attached Robert Pattinson (in a role envisioned first for Vincent Gallo, then Phillip Seymour Hoffman) joined by Binoche, Andre 3000 and Polish actress Agata Buzek, among others. We’ve had a plethora of space movies of late, but expect this to be utterly distinct from any of them.
Release Date: Shooting wrapped in October, so a Venice bow seems more likely than Cannes.

60. “Damsel”
Director: The Zellner Brothers (“Kumiko The Treasure Hunter”)
Cast: Robert Pattinson, Mia Wasikowska, David Zellner, Nathan Zellner
Synopsis: A businessman goes West to join his fiancée in the mountains.
What You Need To Know: If there were any doubters still left that his talents were legit, one-time “Twilight” star Robert Pattinson firmly dispelled them in 2017, first with a wonderfully characterful supporting turn in “The Lost City Of Z,” then with a barnstormer of a lead performance in “Good Time,” genuinely one of the year’s best. For his next trick, the artist formerly known as R-Patz is teaming up with some more acclaimed indie filmmakers, the sibling duo behind the excellent “Kumiko The Treasure Hunter” for this semi-Western, described by the star himself intriguingly as a “slapstick comedy,” also starring the ever-reliable Mia Wasikowska.
Release Date: Sundance

Rob is thrilled about all the Connie Nikas Halloween Costumes

 

Parade sat down with Rob during the Savannah Film Festival and spoke to him about Good Time, Twilight and Halloween amongst other things.  This is what Parade found out:

When Robert Pattinson takes out his phone to show you something, the least you can do is lean forward and take a gander. It’s a few days after Halloween, and the actor is swiping through social media-posted photos of men dressed up as his peroxide-blonde, red-jacketed character in his most recent film, Good Time. His co-director, Josh Safdie, has texted him a steady dose of pics.

“It’s crazy!” he exclaims while scrolling. “There are tons of them. Loads and loads. It’s so unexpected. It really, really shocked me. Like wow, people like the movie! It’s nice.”

What about R-Patz? Do you hate that?

I don’t understand how I can get rid of that. It’s so annoying. Jennifer Lopez started the J.Lo thing, but I didn’t start that name! Why some people get a nickname and some people don’t is really unfair!

The Souvenir: Parts 1 & 2 Now Added to Robert Pattinson IMDbPro Page

 

I am as surprised as you Robert. I tweeted originally back on 24 May 2017 that The Souvenir had been added to IMDbPro.  Then on 30 May I noticed and tweeted that it had been called The Souvenir: Part 1 and that was probably why it was not showing on Robert’s page since we know he is the main lead in Part 2.  Now surprisingly it has been added to Robert’s page.  Whether he has a cameo in Part 1 to introduce his character or whether I come back on here tomorrow saying it’s been removed … time will tell.  It could be that it may just be used as one page and Part 2 will be added to the title as well.  In any event, I will keep you updated.  At this stage, Robert now has 4 projects in development:  High Life, The Souvenir, The Trap and Idol’s Eye.  Can’t wait to see what else is added.

You had me at Scorsese – no actually you had me at Pattinson, Scorsese is just the icing on the cake.  I see what you did there Robert in your Crash interview, distracting us with Antonio Campos meanwhile Scorsese was on the sideline.  Well played Robert, well played.

Robert Pattinson, Tom Burke, Ariane Labed and Richard Ayoade are due to star in British filmmaker Joanna Hogg’s (Archipelago) next film The Souvenir, which will be executive-produced by Martin Scorsese.

Scorsese will serve as executive producer on the romantic mystery alongside his Sikelia Productions partner Emma Tillinger Koskoff.

The Souvenir, developed with the BFI and backed by BBC Films, will be made in two parts, the first feature set to shoot this summer and the second in summer 2018.

Spanning the decade of the 1980’s, the film will chart the story of a young film student, involved in her first serious love affair, who tries to disentangle fact from fiction in a relationship with a complicated and untrustworthy man.

Only God Forgives actor Burke, who also had a leading role in BBC-TWC drama series War & Peace, will play the ‘untrustworthy man’. Pattinson, who’s Cannes competition entry Good Time is generating buzz ahead of its screening, will be the leading male role of the second film, playing an actor.
