The Story While the police are doing everything for the trap again, a bank robber, helped by his brother, does everything he can to avoid jail.
The Issues It was in Cannes, in the parallel section (The Fortnight of Directors) that the New York brothers, Josh and Ben Safdie, were first spotted. It was in 2008 with their indie film The Pleasure of Being Robbed, about a young bohemian woman around the streets of New York. They returned to the same place, one year later, with Lenny and the Kids, where one finds this same energy borrows of fantasy. After a passage by the Venice Film Festival in 2014 with Mad Love in New York, they finally compete. No doubt that the presence of a star or two in their universe has contributed to their unfurling of the red carpet. After his experiences with David Cronenberg and James Gray, the ex-vampire Robert Pattinson continues his road towards auteur cinema. He will be accompanied by Jennifer Jason Leigh. This film, of which a large part of the plot takes place in prison, was shot in a real penitentiary in Queens with actors who, for the most part, made a passage behind the bar.
Robert Pattinson
At 31, the American actor, discovered in the Twilight saga, has already competed with Cosmpolis (2012) and Maps to the Stars (2014), by David Cronenberg, and out of competition with David Michod’s The Rover at the midnight screening.
Rob’s new film “Good Time” is featured in the May issue of Les Inrockuptibles magazine.
Rough translation:
“They almost missed the market, but he they are back in the game. The rising values of The Pleasure of Being Robbed (2008) and Lenny and the Kids (2009), both highly applauded at the Cannes Fortnight and then passing through the Venice Film Festival (Mad Love in New York). This year, the Safdie Brothers, who are the sweethearts of New York indie, create a surprise by inviting themselves to compete for an object where they suddenly feel an unusual wingspan: a film of robbery and gangsters on the run served by a very intriguing cast: Robert Pattinson in mind”
Robert Pattinson given the opportunity to show off a completely new side of himself in Good Time trailer
Here’s a few of the initial reactions to the trailer. Â I will add as I come across more. Â One thing is for sure, people are definitely taking notice of Robert’s career path.
New York sibling directors Josh and Benny Safdie cracked the competition this year with their heist thriller “Good Time,†but it’s likely to attract the most attention for star Robert Pattinson. Now firmly into his post-“Twilight†phase, the actor plays a bank-robbing New Yorker trying to help his mentally disabled brother over the course of a single frantic night. Pattinson, who has been in Cannes competition before with David Cronenberg’s “Cosmopolis,†is well positioned to wow audiences already enamored of his earlier roles with something edgier and more surprising; he could be a strong contender for the festival’s acting prize.
“Good Time†looks like it will continue the Safdie tradition of visceral, gritty and utterly hypnotic indie filmmaking. It should also be another unpredictable entry in Pattinson’s growing oeuvre. The actor has become an indie favorite thanks to collaborations with David Michod, David Cronenberg, Werner Herzog and James Gray. It’s safe to say working with the Safdie Bros should give Pattinson the opportunity to show off a completely new side of himself.
GOOD TIME is a psychotic symphony of propulsive intensity crafted by two of the most exciting young directors working today. Josh and Ben Safdie’s transcendent vision is an intoxicating portrait of desperation and destruction that will not be soon forgotten.

Josh and Benny Safdie talk Good Time & Robert Pattinson with Cahiers du Cinema
Â
Cahier du Cinema also includes an interview with Josh and Benny Safdie as part of their Cannes special issue and it’s so full of information. I can’t wait to see Josh, Benny and Rob do the press junket for Cannes, I bet Josh gets asked about that toilet way too many times:
LCDC: Is the film hard to finance, even with a star like Robert Pattinson?
Josh: Yes, very hard. It is a genre film, but we didn’t want typical actors of genre films, we wanted people in particular, we wanted them to be related to real life. This is the film on which we spent the most time. Ten months for editing. We had to re-shoot some scenes, we added an entire section with Jennifer Jason Leigh. It was our biggest budget, but we didn’t have enough money.
Benny: And the shooting was difficult! At first it was a 26 days shoot, in the end we shot 33 or 34 days. We spent long days in the cold, it’s a nocturnal movie since the hero is a fugitive criminal. Afterwards, we remember the best moments, but they are buried under so much effort, work and difficulties! In addition, my son is born two weeks before the beginning, we shot 16 hours a day, and when I went home I changed nappies … I hardly slept. It was a very intense period and I think you can feel it on the screen.
