I remember when I first saw glimpses of this in the teaser trailer, I couldn’t wait to see how the entire scene would unfold and it did not disappoint. For me, this is where you see how pushed over the edge Eric is. That maniacal glean in his eyes, his behaviour as he struts and swaggers through gate/lane. The way his physical appearance is as unraveled as his environment. I loved how Cronenberg peeled away a part of Eric’s exterior in every scene until we get to this. I could go on for days and like Sue has said – it’s hard not to post this entire film as my favourite scene. But for today – let’s just enjoy Eric swaggering like a boss.
Golden Years Maria’s Favourite Cosmopolis Scene from RPAustralia on Vimeo.
How to choose a fave scene from Cosmopolis, that is the question. There are so many AMAZING moments, each & every one I love. Â When having to choose just one though, I went with the scene where Eric shoots Torval. When I read that part in the book I knew seeing Rob act it out would be epic & of course he did NOT disappoint, he completely blew me away (pun not intended) Until now, Eric has never really had a proper conversation with Torval, of course they have spoken but no smiles or general friendly banter like here. Eric is lulling Torval into a false sense of security, smiling & joking, even looking him in the eye for the first time then BANG. Torval never saw that coming. Rob NAILS this scene, the look in his eye when he shoots Torval – perfect. I cannot say enough amazing things about Rob’s performance & the film. I still remember the feeling after I had watched the film for the first time. Eric & his story had me mind, body & soul & I feel the same every time I have watched since. There are no words to describe how much I LOVE Rob as Eric, his portrayal of this character is truly beyond words. You all know exactly what I mean. Cannot wait to spend the week celebrating Rob as Eric & this fantastic film.
Thanks so much once again to Maria for making these amazing vids for us. LOVE them so much.
No surprise which gorgeous man is next 🙂

Every frame in this film is like a work of art, such beautiful cinematography. I love the colours, the feel.  There is just so much to admire, particularly Rob on top form as the beautiful soul that is Jacob.  I adored the book & was so excited to see Rob breathe life into this beloved character and he simply does NOT disappoint. At all. His Jacob is more than I could have hoped for and I have many favourite moments in the film but this particular scene stands out for me. He is still obviously shaken after his encounter with August but he puts that to one side as he bonds with Marlena over the welfare of the horse & it’s suffering. When she says ‘Nobody stops, nobody dies until August says so’ the look of determination that comes over his face; instantly putting Marlena’s feelings & the animal’s suffering before anything else. The line “I’m the vet, it’s my decision” has me rooting for him even more. It’s just such an emotional and moving scene….seeing how visibly upset Jacob is at times is just heartbreaking. Beautifully so. Finally, Marlena’s line “Mr Jankowski, I’ll be sorry to see you go” is so heartfelt & you know she genuinely means it as he looks back at her. *happy sigh*
There are so many scenes I love in WFE but this is one of my favorites. The immediate bond between Jacob and Rosie tugs at your heartstrings and this scene, for me, is a pivotal moment in the story. After witnessing August’s violent temper and punishment of Rosie for running off, Jacob fears that it is only a matter of time before he kills her. Camel cannot offer him any assurance, reinforcing the fact that if August can kill off the workers without any remorse or regret, an innocent animal has no chance. As Jacob cleans Rosie’s wounds, he asks Camel in Polish to lift his leg and give him the rag he is sitting on. Rosie suddenly lifts HER leg, astonishing Jacob. It is now clear to him that Rosie was not responsive to earlier commands because the only language she understood was Polish. You can see the relief in Jacob’s eyes, knowing that breaking the communication barrier will spare her further abuse. I especially loved Camel’s comment after August asks Rosie in Polish to raise her leg and she does not respond: “Might help if he said please”.
I always tell people who have not seen WFE that by the end of the movie, an elephant will have stolen your heart. 🙂
