18 March 2025

Very disappointing that there was pretty much zero effort to promote Mickey17 in Australia (current box office as at 17 March is $2,295,523). I’ve been told it was similar in the US where their current box office is $33,212,062.

Production companies (I’m looking at you Warner Bros) wonder why movies don’t make much at the box office, (and there may be some truth with the cost of living worldwide being sky high and people are watching their spending) but I’m more inclined to believe that having such a limited cinema release before being released digitally does not give people incentive to rush to the movies. I know it was the 1970s, but Star Wars was at the cinema for 2+ years (mainly because only one cinema was screening) but also due to the fact that it was the only place you could watch it. Anyway, according to World of Reel:

“Warner Bros. has had enough. They’ve decided to ship ‘Mickey 17’ to digital on March 25 — that’s only 18 days after its theatrical debut. The film is expected to have a 60% drop and earn $7.5M in its second weekend. ‘Mickey’ is destined to cause a $100M loss for Warner Bros.Mickey 17 is being digitally released on 25 March 2025.”

Meanwhile according to Box Office Report Mickey 17 grossed an estimated $10.2M from global IMAX screens through Sunday (Domestic – $5.2M | International – $5.0M).

In other news, Mickey 17 is going great guns in South Korea where it’s the highest grossing film so far this year and according to The Numbers has grossed $17.9 million. It has also remained no. 1 leading the box office in the UK and Ireland reaching

Mickey 17 has remained no 1 in UK/Ireland, with Screen Daily reporting “‘Mickey 17’ retains UK-Ireland box office lead, reaching $5,800,000.

According to The Numbers, the current international total is $57.2 million and the current worldwide cumulative box office is $90,412,062.

Mickey17 opened in some territories last Thursday 6 March 2025 so all eyes were on its box office over the weekend. Although most reviews I’ve seen (and social media comments) love Rob’s performance, some are perplexed on the film itself. I personally saw it over the weekend and loved it. I don’t know if I can have a fave Rob performance because his performances are so unique and both Mickeys are a testament to that. For now, here is what the following said about the opening weekend box office:

The Numbers: Warner Bros. is reporting a $19.1-million projected opening weekend for Mickey 17 this weekend, somewhat short of our Friday-morning prediction, and a disappointment for a movie that cost the studio $118 million. … On Friday, I mentioned that the model’s prediction for Mickey 17 depended on the film’s Thursday audience not being dominated by Robert Pattinson and Bong Joon-ho fans, or it at least finding a way to reach beyond that core audience over the weekend. Its final result suggests that it hasn’t really done that. It does have good reviews (although generally not spectacular ones), and positive word of mouth will help it, but probably not enough to come close to justifying its budget. The model predicts it will finish its domestic run with $57 million based on its first three days in theaters.

Mickey 17 is doing better internationally, with $34.2 million to date, and $24.5 million this weekend. Unsurprisingly, its best territory is South Korea, where it has bagged $14.6 million so far. Other territories with over $1 million in the bank are France ($2.9m), the United Kingdom ($2.7m), Germany ($1.3m), Mexico ($1.3m), and China ($1.3m). All told, $100 million internationally remains just within reach, which would add up to around $150 million worldwide by the end of its run. Let’s hope the studio doesn’t learn the wrong lesson from its creative gamble—this is exactly the kind of film studios need to be making to revitalize the theatrical business.

VARIETY: Box Office Misfire: Big-Budget ‘Mickey 17’ Stumbles With $24 Million Overseas, $53 Million Globally. If only Warner Bros. could reprint money in the way that scientists reprint Robert Pattinson’s body in “Mickey 17.” The goofy sci-fi comedy ignited to $24 million overseas and more than $50 million globally, a decent start for an original film in the current theatrical landscape. It just cost way too much to ever turn a profit in this lifetime. [Maria: The title of this article intimates that the movie is a flop, yet in their actual article they state it’s “a decent start” *shrugs]

THE WRAP: Warner Bros.’ “Mickey 17” doesn’t look like it will blast off at the box office, earning an opening weekend of $19.1 million from 3,807 locations as it faces a long road to recouping its nine-digit production budget. … Reception for the film has been generally positive with Rotten Tomatoes scores of 79% critics and 73% audience to go with a B on CinemaScore. But it remains to be seen whether that good-but-not-great word of mouth will be enough to give “Mickey 17” the legs to be theatrically profitable … “Mickey 17” is the only film to gross more than $10 million this weekend, with overall grosses reaching an industry estimated $57.7 million. That’s 59% down from $137 million a year ago, when “Dune: Part Two” was opening to $82.5 million. The upcoming spring is expected to be similarly slow, as theaters are looking to summer to fulfill the promise of a box office rebound in 2025.

DEADLINE: After beginning offshore release last frame in Korea, director Bong Joon-ho’s home market, Warner Bros expanded Mickey 17 to a further 66 international box office hubs this session. The new overseas plays, along with the sophomore Korea frame, came in at $24.5M which is in line with pre-weekend projections, and lifts the international cume to an estimated $34.2M through today. Combined with domestic, the global weekend is $43.6M for a running worldwide total of $53.3M. … It gave Parasite Oscar winner Bong his best opening in 59 offshore markets (including all of Europe — save for Norway — and Latin America as a region). In 25 overseas release markets, it ranked as the No. 1 U.S. title. That includes China where Ne Zha 2 continues its dominance and set a new record by crossing $2B in-market this weekend

And in relation to IMAX, Deadline reports “In Imax, Mickey 17’s global cume is $6.3M for nearly 12% of the worldwide total.”

Box Office Reports states the following:

3 March 2025

From Deadline: Ahead of next weekend’s domestic and wider overseas rollout, Bong Joon-ho’s Mickey 17 kicked off in Korea this session. The sci-fi satire hit Bong’s home market with an estimated $9M four-day start (which includes tomorrow’s Independence Day holiday), scoring the biggest opening weekend of 2025 so far and the best for a Warner Bros movie since 2019, as well as Robert Pattinson’s top Korea launch ever.

Bong’s first film since his multiple Oscar winner Parasite, Mickey 17 was the No. 1 draw for Korea audiences who gave it a 70% market share. The movie debuted on a non-traditional Friday, with the early play teeing up the global rollout this coming week which will include such majors as China, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, UK, Australia and all of Latin America, alongside North America.

The Korea start came in higher than Dune: Part Two (+10%), Alien: Romulus (+33%), Furiosa (+64%), Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (+129%) and Dune (+138%).

Across the FSS three-day of $7M, Mickey 17 grossed $600K in Imax from just 27 screens for 9% of the nationwide total.

According to Luiz below:

“Meanwhile in #Korea’s #BoxOffice, #BongJoonHo’s #Mickey17  grossed $6.7M on BIGGEST 3-day Opening weekend for WB Post-Covid, reaching 987k admissions in 3 days, after grossing another strong $2.6M on SUN, going actually up +6.3% from SAT, isolated at #1 dominating 67.5% of market share. Biggest 3-day weekend for WB Post-COVID, beating #Wonka’s both $3.9M 3-day weekend, $5.7M 5-day opening, and also beating #DunePartTwo’s $4.7M 3-day weekend and almost beating #Dune2’s $6.9M 5-day opening in just 3 days.”
