Sam Woodhams reflected on working on Mickey 17 on his IG:

I had the time of my life doubling for Robert Pattinson as he brought to life multiple Mickeys. What an honour to stand opposite, and to have the task of throwing some acting at him to work with! It’s just as well my job was to watch and study Rob closely, as I was absolutely mesmerised from day one.

Filmfare: Director Bong Joon Ho On Working With Robert Pattinson In Mickey 17

Exploring Robert Pattinson’s range as an actor

Robert is best known for his roles in Twilight, The Batman and more. Revealing why he wanted Pattinson to play a man who signs up to be an expendable, Bong Joon Ho shared, “I found this goofy side to him, and I had already known how incredible he is as an actor from films like The Lighthouse, The Batman, and especially Good Time by the Safdie brothers. I already knew he had a wide range. The question was, could this actor pull off Mickey? He would have to play two roles, Mickey 17 and 18, who are very different characters. Could one actor cover this wide spectrum? And he was really the actor that came to mind when I thought about who could play these two very different roles.” He added, “Rob also responded to our offer and said, ‘Yes’ very quickly. So, it was a very smooth and happy cast

Sharing his process of fleshing out Mickey, Bong Joon Ho said, “I added a lot of detailed descriptions about the character. But no matter how detailed they are, in the end, they’re just words on a page. It’s really up to the actor to breathe life into these characters. Rob brought in so much of his own creativity and ideas to add nuances to the characters. I was so surprised and impressed by everything he contributed.”

Sharing the screen with Robert Pattinson
Acting opposite Robert Pattinson—especially when he was juggling multiple versions of Mickey—was an awe-inspiring experience for Naomi. “The guy is a wonder,” she gushed. The role required immense technical skill, yet Robert managed it all while maintaining a sense of playfulness and joy. “This was going to be a tough ask of anyone, and to watch him handle it with so much ease and a smile on his face was incredible,” she shared, spotlighting his role-switching choices were remarkably specific and perfectly suited to the tone.

“For me, I was just watching in awe and was like, “Wow, this is…” It’s happening in real time as well, so you’re really seeing how someone works, watching him go back to the monitor… It has to be a methodical process, because you’re playing two different characters,” she put it.

Naomi admired his balance of preparation and play, calling it the mark of a truly great actor: “He’s such a good actor. Such a good actor. That’s it.”

Pink Villa – Mark Ruffalo: “Rob’s (Robert Pattinson) a movie star—he’s beautiful, talented—but here, he’s completely stripped down. It’s a true character transformation. … Despite portraying his on-screen adversary, Ruffalo has nothing but admiration for Robert Pattinson’s performance: At the read-through, half the cast was there in person, and half—myself included—were on Zoom. I remember thinking, ‘How is Rob gonna do this? How is he gonna choose to do this character?’ And then he came in with this soft, working-class humility for Mickey—a character that maybe wasn’t the most educated or eloquent, but was deeply sincere. The actor continued, “I was really impressed by that choice. Even his voice had this South Philly, blue-collar feel. I mean, Rob’s a movie star—he’s beautiful, talented—but here, he’s completely stripped down. Ruffalo also said, “He’s thin, gray, with the saddest haircut you’ve ever seen. It’s a true character transformation. But more than anything, it’s that humility—something Rob genuinely has—that makes his performance so heartfelt and beautiful.”

What do Naomi and Toni say about Rob – check out below

Steve Buscemi – 26 February 2025

You might remember in Rob’s Variety interview for Mickey17 that he said this about his character’s voice:

“I actually think I realized today what I was doing,” Pattinson said of how “Fargo” was part of his accent prep work. “We were doing an interview earlier and Bong said one of the thoughts he was having for [Mickey] 18 was Peter Stormare from ‘Fargo.’ And then I think how that went into my head was to do Steve Buscemi as 17. I kind of did it by accident, but I don’t think I realized that until today. I thought I was doing something else.”

THR during an interview with Steve Buscemi obtained this reaction from him:

Speaking of your voice, there were a bunch of headlines out of the Berlin Film Festival recently because Robert Pattinson, who was there for the world premiere of Bong Joon Ho’s Mickey 17, said he modeled his accent in the film after yours in Fargo. Did you hear about that? How does it make you feel to know that your work in Fargo is still inspiring other actors?

I’m kind of blown away that happened. No, I haven’t heard that and I haven’t seen the film. My character and Peter Stormare’s character were sort of outsiders so I never did that Minnesotan accent. I’m not sure if that’s what he meant or if he was inspired by my accent, my voice or the way my character spoke. Without seeing the film, I’m not sure what he’s referring to but I’m blown away by it. “

Rob also told Empire “My initial idea was to do impressions of Steve-O and Johnny Knoxville [from ‘Jackass‘],” Pattinson said in 2024. “I love Steve-O’s voice. We did it on the first read-through. And Bong was like, ‘That voice sounds like nails on a chalkboard.’ I was like, ‘Is that a good thing?’ He was like, ‘No.’”

Naomi Ackie & Toni Collette – 13 February 2025

Toni Collette spoke to Fortress of Solitude (South Africa) about working with Bong Joon-Ho, Mark Ruffalo and of course Rob. This is what she had to say about Rob:

“On the other hand, there’s Robert Pattinson, who’s acting as more than just one Mickey in this film. “Rob is fascinating to watch up close,” she says. “His two Mickeys are vastly different people. He’s just ridiculously talented and a humble sweetie.””

Naomi Ackie – 30 December 2024

Naomi Ackie was interviewed by BritishGQ for her role in Blink Twice (Zoe Kravitz directorial debut) and Mickey17 came up. She was asked about Rob (and Rob was asked via email about Naomi):

“How do I describe Rob?” she wonders. “He’s a fucking good actor. There is something that happens with him on that screen that is, like, insane.”

“She was very easy going yet dedicated,” Pattinson told me, via email. “So fun and fearless as a performer, and incredibly intuitive and effortlessly adaptable.”

Steven Yuen – 17 April 2023
