According to Empire Magazine who has an exclusive Mickey17 issue about to hit the stands on 24 October 2024 (pre-order your copy HERE), Bong Joon-Ho DID get final cut:
It wouldn’t be the first time – Director Bong famously wrestled with Harvey Weinstein over the cut of his first English-language film Snowpiercer. But, as he tells Empire in our world-exclusive Mickey 17 issue, he has indeed got final cut on his latest film, and that’s how it always was. “With Okja and now Mickey 17, I was given the final cut as part of my deal,” he explains. “The studio respected my final cut rights.” Which isn’t to say there wasn’t some back and forth. “Of course, during the editing process there are many opinions and many discussions that happen,” he continues. “But this film is my cut, and I’m very happy about it. It was a long process, but it was always smooth and respectful.”
Between Snowpiercer and Okja, it’s clear that when Director Bong moves into English-language mode, he doesn’t make any attempt to temper down his wonderfully wild instincts. Which, according to Robert Pattinson, is the same on Mickey 17. “It’s really cool that a studio has done this film,” the star tells Empire, “and that Bong pushed to have the final cut on it — to make something that does feel incredibly unusual.” Get ready for another pure, uncut slice of Bong Joon Ho.
Empire also talks to Rob about his inspiration for the voices for the multiple Mickeys:
Switching between portraying Mickeys 17 and 18, Pattinson had to find a way to differentiate them – including giving them unique accents, inspired by an unlikely source. “It’s a little like Stimpy,” he tells Empire of Mickey 17’s vocal tones, nodding to the cult ’90s cartoon Ren & Stimpy. “When 18 comes in, it’s a little bit more like Ren.” With every new reprinted Mickey, Pattinson imagines the character as losing a little something. “I just had this idea that he’s kind of like a dog with a complete lack of self-worth,” he explains. “He just keeps turning up, reporting for duty. But then I hope the reveal is that it’s a combination of deep, misguided guilt, and also survival. It’s him just saying, ‘I’ll just keep lowering my expectations the whole time.’”
As it happends, channelling Ren & Stimpy wasn’t Pattinson’s first choice for his Mickey voices. “My initial idea was to do impressions of Steve-O and Johnny Knoxville [from Jackass],” he chuckles. “I love Steve-O’s voice. We did it on the first read-through. And Bong was like, ‘That voice sounds like nails on a chalkboard.’ I was like, ‘Is that a good thing?’ He was like, ‘No.’” Don’t try this at home.

6 June 2024
We told you back in February 2024 that the release of Mickey17 was being delayed until January 2025. According to Reel Updates on X via @DanielRPK:
MICKEY 17 being delayed to January 2025 has to do with BONG JOON-HO not getting final cut on the film and Warner Bros wanting to release a “more accessible” version of the film.
This does not bode well for me. A “more accessible” film to me means it will take away from being a Bong Joon-Ho film. I also wonder what Rob thinks about this. We’ve been waiting for a new Rob film for so long I feel like I’m back in 2010 waiting for Bel Ami news.
22 February 2024
I know Rob fans are used to waiting so patience is kind of our thing, but waiting until 2025 – I don’t know if I can handle that. According to Variety, Mickey17 will not be released until 31 January 2025:
Warner Bros. has found a new release date for “Mickey 17,” moving Bong Joon Ho and Robert Pattinson‘s highly-anticipated collaboration to 2025.
The sci-fi movie will now debut on Jan. 31, 2025, after Warner Bros. undated the movie from its scheduled March 29, 2024, release date and bumped “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” up two weeks, to take its place. When the move was announced last month, sources told Variety that the decision was made to allow more time to finish the project, which had been affected due to last year’s strikes and other various production shifts.
The new January 2025 release date also allows “Mickey 17” to open in IMAX, which wouldn’t have been possible any earlier because all those dates were previously committed to other titles. Additionally, the new date coincides with Lunar New Year, which is a major moviegoing event internationally.
January also tends to be a box office dead zone, without many new releases and many of the bigger hits (like last year’s “Wonka,” 2019’s “Aquaman” or 2015’s “American Sniper”) carrying over from strong late December debuts. Thus, a long-awaited movie like “Mickey 17” might benefit from pent-up demand, especially as this corridor of the release calendar has been successful for recent hits like “M3GAN,” “Bad Boys for Life,” the “Scream” reboot and “Split.” As far as the film’s current competition goes, the movie opens in a window between “Paddington in Peru,” which expands to U.S. theaters on Jan. 17, and Marvel’s “Captain America: Brave New World,” which is slated to open two weeks later on Feb. 14.
10 January 2024
Mickey17’s anticipated 29 March 2024 release date has been shelved. At this stage, a release date is up in the air, although as mentioned yesterday, it’s possible there may be a Cannes’ releae. Time will tell, but at this stage according to Variety:
Sources tell Variety that the decision to move the highly anticipated sci-fi movie from the Korean filmmaker was made to allow more time to finish the project, which had been affected due to last year’s strikes and other various production shifts.

We have all been patiently waiting for the release of the official trailer for Mickey17 considering that it’s supposedly being released in March 2024. However, according to Jordan Ruimy at World of Reel:
In October, I reported that Bong Joon-ho’s “Mickey 17” would most likely have its March 29, 2024 release delayed to the summer. That still hasn’t happened, but my sources keep telling me that it will.
The folks over at EmpireCity are hearing the same, they’re reporting that Bong’s film might will be released in the summer. There hasn’t been much promotional material for the film either, save for a measly teaser, and it’s supposed to be unveiled in just a few months? Highly doubtful.
I had heard that Warner was pushing the film back to a late May — early June slot, with a big splashy premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. Bong’s last film (“Parasite”) won the Palme d’Or, so it would be a big return to the fest for the Korean auteur.
Last summer, those lucky enough to have attended a test screening of Bong “Mickey 17” got quite the experience. The film is said to be a true original.

It feels like Christmas with this first look teaser video and screenshot released by Warner Bros today and then they confirm the film won’t be released until 29 March 2024 – give and take I suppose. We also found out that it’s now called “Mickey 17”. I’m very much looking forward to this film as I loved the novel and the humour. Can’t wait to read the sequel “AntiMatter Blues” which is out March 2023.
From Variety:
Oscar-winning director Bong Joon Ho’s next film “Mickey 17,” which stars Robert Pattinson, is hitting theaters in 2024.
The Warner Bros. movie is currently in production and will debut on the big screen on March 29, 2024.
The sci-fi story is adapted from Edward Ashton’s novel, described by publisher St. Martin Press as a high-concept cerebral thriller in the vein of “The Martian” and “Dark Matter.” Pattinson will play an “expendable” — a disposable employee on a human expedition sent to colonize the ice world Nifheim — who refuses to let his replacement clone take his place.
Plot details for the movie have not been confirmed, and it’s not clear how closely Bong plans to stick to the source material. Ashton’s book was published in February 2022.
