Joanna Hogg was inteviewed during Sundance and at the end of this interview at around 2.15 she mentions that she always planned to make two films and that The Souvenir: Part II isn’t a sequel in the traditional sense and that he’s glad she didn’t shoot the two films back to back.
In case you haven’t been following on Social media, The Souvenir: Part I has been receiving fabulous reviews.
From Little White Lies:
The spirit of the 1980s is evident both in the soundtrack (Bronski Beat, The Specials and The Psychedelic Furs all feature) and politics of a film that wrestles with notions of class privilege and blossoming female desire, as well as ideas about ‘female art’ and the female artist as perceived by men. A wry wit sparkles throughout, and means that when the heartache eventually comes it does so with real emotional impact.
Most intriguingly of all, it has already been announced that The Souvenir will receive a sequel – Hogg is currently working on the script, and Robert Pattinson is set to co-star with Swinton-Byrne, reprising her role as Julie. It feels as though this film barely scratches the service of its fascinating central character, and and it’s truly exciting to have a filmmaker as honest and articulate as Hogg working today.
From The Film Stage
With the knowledge that Hogg will soon embark on the second part of The Souvenir this summer (backed by A24 again, with Robert Pattinson joining the cast), the finale is less of a cliffhanger and more of an exquisite nod to a future that includes a great many possibilities. “The second is going to be a little more flamboyant in a way,†Hogg told audiences at her world premiere. “I’m looking forward to telling the story of a young filmmaker finding her voice.†With the part one being a ravishing, painful look at getting one’s footing in life, we can’t recall the last time a sequel held such tantalizing promise.
From Variety:
Joanna Hogg takes a little of both positions in her rich, exquisitely reflective fourth feature — a work of memoir shattered and reassembled into a universally moving, truthful fiction. Achingly well-observed in its study of a young artist inspired, derailed and finally strengthened by a toxic relationship, it is at once the coming-of-age story of many women and a specific creative manifesto for one of modern British cinema’s most singular writer-directors. A satisfying rebound from the precious insularity of 2014’s “Exhibition,†Hogg’s most ambitious work to date also looks to be her most broadly exposed, with Martin Scorsese lending his clout as executive producer, Tilda Swinton bringing marquee appeal to a pitch-perfect ensemble, and A24 having already snapped up U.S. distribution rights. It’s a good time to get on board: “The Souvenir Part II,†with Robert Pattinson joining the project, is already in the works.
