You read that right.   Death Grips first shared “Birds” on their Facebook on 22 August 2013.  Funnily enough this song was rumored to have been recorded for the non-existent movie Miseonism, remember all that hullabaloo.  I hope this isn’t another hoax – it is Death Grips after all.

UPDATED:  “It’s been confirmed that this is true. Zach Hill recorded Pattinson’s guitar with his iPhone and the band sampled the recording on the track.” (@pitchfork)

Thanks Pamela (@Tiggeramaone) for finding this and the tip

You can listen to the song below or download it for free from Death Grip’s website here.  If you want the whole album click here

And here’s what Rolling Stone had to say about Birds:

“The latest song, possibly a taste of their highly anticipated 2014 album, features nursery rhyme-ish lyrics wth a nightmarish twist set against dirty guitar licks, heavy synths, and Hill’s signature drumming.

“One bird, two bird, three birds, four/ Five birds, six times life is war/ One bird, two birds, three birds, four/ Fuck you think I fuck this for/ Fuck you,” Burnett raps over the grimy, psychedelic track.” [My emphasis]

Here’s Rob with Death Grips, Beyonce and Jamie Strachan 4 weeks before they unleashed Birds on their Facebook.

Updated:  I like this track review by TheNeedleDrop of Birds.  Anthony talks about the melody/guitars about 3.48, but I’d listen to the entire review esp the tip about Mutley’s laugh:

And want to know why this only came to light now? According to Stereogum:

“Death Grips’ Government Plates got a vinyl release for Record Store Day Black Friday, …”

Ok. I’ll try and be more coherent now.

    AHHHHHHHHHH!!!

God, I hope this isn’t a hoax. Rob plugged in! We have nothing to compare this to so I can’t make a judgment call. I hope it is him. The guitar sounds awesome

    AHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!

@Carmel I hope it isn’t either, but I imagine if it was then it would have been less low key. Am happy to drift along believing it’s Rob. I hope they have footage, they tend to film a lot of their sessions by the look of it. They are unleashing their last album soon – is it too much to hope Rob features in that too.

I’m with @Carmel – the very thought of Rob plugged in and in a studio *FLAILS* I’m still holding back a little – like you say, hoax? But it’s brilliant and exciting and wonderful if true. 🙂 and filming the sessions you say?? Let’s PUT THAT OUT THERE!!!! *giggles* oh wow – let it be Rob and let it be soooo. Pretty please with jungle bells on. 🙂

Okay, I’m not going to share with you all, the music that I just had to turn off in my house in order to listen to this ……. let’s just say the two didn’t really ‘go together’ LMAO!

Having said that, my positive reaction to this song has kind of surprised me….maybe I’m just in the mood to hear someone say ‘fuck you’ …… or maybe I’m just totally biased because of the Rob factor……. but I kinda liked it, in a weird sorta way. Oh, and if there’s a video of this, I’m BEGGING for it’s release. I pictured Rob’s fingers …… okay, I’m stopping there.

? Don’t quite know what to think or who to believe. If it is Rob, good on him for branching out and hanging out with creative dudes. If it isn’t, and Death Grips is a) taking the piss or b) trying to cash in on Rob’s name, then ‘Fuck you’ back atchya. Seems kinda plausible though, so I’ll stay optimistic. Jules, I want some of those ‘jungle bells’ you spoke of for Christmas 🙂
