Bet you didn’t think I was going to give you an update considering it’s only being featured on two screens in Australia. Well you’re wrong. According to Don Groves of IF.com:
“Maps to the Stars, David Cronenberg’s darkly comic Hollywood-set drama starring Julianne Moore, Mia Wasikowska, Olivia Williams, Evan Bird, Sarah Gadon, John Cusack and Robert Pattinson, opened with a fair $14,400 at two cinemas.”
I don’t have the breakdown for Syd/Melb but that’s not too bad considering.
Thanks Maria, I was actually wondering. I saw it yesterday and thought it was fantastic. Dark, twisted, typical Cronenberg. Awesome performances by everyone too. There were quite a few people in the theatre which pleased me immensely.
Always on the ball, our Maria. Thanks for the update – it’s nice to know there are plenty of discerning film buffs out there who seek out quality, no matter how limited a film’s release.
Very happy to see that!
Thanks for the update Maria & for sure, that is pretty good considering the limited release. So great to see 🙂
So wonderful you were able to see the film on the big screen Ephie & there were quite a few people there, love hearing that 🙂
Well, I’m going to have my mini-rant here-and-now, if that’s okay with everyone. Apologies in advance.
Firstly, thanks for the update @Maria. (although I expected nothing less from you LOL!)
Secondly, I think that figure is great, considering my experience last Thursday evening. We rocked up to the theatre in Newtown, on the first official day of the movie showing…… and there was not a single poster, flyer, ANYTHING, ANYWHERE in the entire place, advertising MAPS. They must have had posters for at least 40 other movies ~ either current or coming soon. We searched EVERYWHERE. So other than the 4 words Maps To The Stars at the front of the theatre, there was ZERO evidence that it was even an option for people, which pissed me off a little. Fortunately we didn’t search high-and-low until AFTER the movie …… and then my cousin and I proceeded to have an hour long conversation about the brains (or lack-there-of) behind the distribution & marketing (or lack-there-of) of movies ……… I can only hope sincerely that MAPS posters appeared at some stage following our theatre visit.
Anyway, we were lucky enough to know about it, and can I just say that it was SO WORTH travelling a 1000 kms to see it on the big screen! I absolutely loved it, very different, loved ALL of the performances (what a brilliant cast). And those 8 minutes of Rob? Heaven. But maybe more importantly, my cousin thought it was fantastic. And she couldn’t understand why it would be given such a ridiculously limited release in Aussie cinemas ……
Shit, sorry. I’ll leave it there (I did warn you.) Oh, and Carmel, I kinda wished I was seeing Maps through your eyes (i.e. spoiler-free). I just know you’re gonna love it, if you haven’t already seen it.
@Sue I have been waiting to hear your reaction. I’m pretty sure you loved that scene with Julianne and Carrie Fisher!
I’ll see if I can find out anything about why it’s such a limited release – wish me luck.
Thanks for the update Maria. These are respectable numbers all things considered. The limited release is puzzling with such huge stars power and accolades attached.
@Sue – Awesome to hear your take on Maps – It really is an amazing movie. My heart goes out to anyone who is 1000klm away and can’t get to see it.
