There are so many scenes I love in WFE but this is one of my favorites. The immediate bond between Jacob and Rosie tugs at your heartstrings and this scene, for me, is a pivotal moment in the story. After witnessing August’s violent temper and punishment of Rosie for running off, Jacob fears that it is only a matter of time before he kills her. Camel cannot offer him any assurance, reinforcing the fact that if August can kill off the workers without any remorse or regret, an innocent animal has no chance. As Jacob cleans Rosie’s wounds, he asks Camel in Polish to lift his leg and give him the rag he is sitting on. Rosie suddenly lifts HER leg, astonishing Jacob. It is now clear to him that Rosie was not responsive to earlier commands because the only language she understood was Polish. You can see the relief in Jacob’s eyes, knowing that breaking the communication barrier will spare her further abuse. I especially loved Camel’s comment after August asks Rosie in Polish to raise her leg and she does not respond: “Might help if he said please”.

I always tell people who have not seen WFE that by the end of the movie, an elephant will have stolen your heart. 🙂

What a delight this scene is. Rob once again needs to go from despair to elation. And he achieves this so beautifully

ITA Suze – Camel’s ‘ please’ comment is pure gold
