We already know that David Cronenberg loves Rob – I mean he offered Rob this role directly and can I tell you how monumental that is.  Last night Vertigo and I had the pleasure of listening to Al Pacino talk in person for 2 hours about his career, his loves, his passions.  I think it was an amazing insight into Hollywood from a bona fide legend.  One of the most important things he said was that “if a director wants YOU then that pretty much says it all”.  That’s not verbatim, but pretty close. I just remember Vertigo and I both turning to each other and saying  – see see omg Cronenberg wanted Rob.  I never doubted it, but to hear Pacino say it well it leaves no doubt in my mind that Cronenberg definitely sees what we see and more.
Thanks to The Playlist below is an extract from an interview between David Cronenberg and Jeff Otto:
“Indeed, the director is fully aware that Pattinson’s presence is likely to bring him a new audience, and he’s pleased about the prospect. “The excitement around ‘Cosmopolis’ because of Rob was terrific. It was fun. The idea that these kids, that they really continue to be excited. I’ve said this about Viggo [Mortensen]. If you’re a fan of Aragorn in ‘Lord of the Rings‘ then you don’t have to see ‘Eastern Promises,’ but if you’re a fan of Viggo as an actor you must see ‘Eastern Promises.’ And its the same with Rob. If they’re really Rob fans as opposed to Edward…whatever the name of the character is. Rob fans will want to see ‘Cosmopolis.’
And it sounds like fans will be pleased, and the doubters silenced, as the director couldn’t be happier with his choice. “He’s fantastic in it. They’ll see him do things they’ve never seen him do, believe me. They’ll be blown away,” he said. “Cosmopolis” doesn’t yet have a release date or distributor, but we’d put good money on a debut at Cannes or Toronto next year, before a fall 2012 release.”
David .. just so you know … we are foremost Rob’s fans and would see anything he is in- the fact that we endure Twilight shows that. Â Click on the link above to read the full article.
Cosmopolis has turned this true Rob fan into a Dellino fan and a Cronenberg fan as well.
That we are Maria!!!! I love hearing how impressed David Cronenberg was with Rob, it just shows that the right people are seeing what we see and I couldn’t be happier for him!!!
Oh I just LOVE hearing Rob be praised & especially by someone like Cronenberg. Makes me so happy to see him receive the credit he so truly deserves. Yep it says it ALL that David wanted Rob. I LOVE that he went after HIM. Smart man you are David, very very smart. Oh how I cannot wait to see Rob as Eric 😀
Yep exactly Maria, we are 100% Rob fans. We only love Edward because Rob plays him & endure Twilight purely because of him. Anything that Rob is in we love & will always go see & support.
What’s your favourite DeLillo novel now @Carmel? I bought Underworld for my boss about 8 years ago – he’s always loved DeLillo.
Cannot wipe the smile off my face after reading this. Just fantastic. Mr C you are a very wise man. And how fab for you girls to get to listen to Mr Pacino *THUD* Love Al .And DeLillo’s latest book The angel Esmeralda looks interesting.
@Cindy we still can’t believe we got to see and listen to Al. I could have stayed there all night – what an amazing career
Now if only De Niro would come down under
@Maria – so far I have read Libra and I’m 1/2 way through Underworld now. Every line of a Dellino book is poetry. He stops me dead with his original simplicity. A favourite? It will probably always be Cosmopolis for obvious reasons
It was great to get this confirmation from Al himself and cannot be more thrilled that Cronenberg went after Rob. A genius with a vision just knows things.
Side note: It was also very interesting to hear that some movies never get made when the director doesn’t get his way – like the time (pre Godfather) Francis Ford Coppola wanted Paccino for a movie but the studio didn’t and because Francis believed that no one else could play the part, the movie was shelved. So later when Coppola wanted Al to play Michael (and Al wanted Brando to come on board), the studio told Coppola he was mad and fought him on it … needless to say the studio caved and ate loads of humble pie.
*waves to seeing Viggo’s name on here* mwah!
It would have been amazing to hear all this from the great man himself. You guys have had a momentus weekend. Ceddie, Al and Eddie. Wow!
I really hope Rob gets to read/hear about this kind of awesome praise ~ he so deserves it. And it would certainly mean much more to him, coming from someone like Cronenberg. Awesome post, Maria. Gives me goosebumps! Can’t wait for Cosmopolis!
