Well I think this is a fitting article to be sent today. Never forget the bigger picture. Top 10 Films UK tweeted us the link to Dans’ article about Rob “A Talent for the Unexpected” and well here’s an extract, but you should most definitely click on the link above to read the entire article:
“A movie star with swashbuckling good looks might suggest Twilight’s Robert Pattinson is just one of many Hollywood commodities, but beneath the surface, you’ll find far more substance in this talented Brit.
…
Perhaps what’s most appealing about Pattinson within his movie work is his courage to experiment. After Twilight you’d forgive him for pursuing similarly commercial roles – the sort guaranteed to gain favour from his core group of younger fans – but he hasn’t done that. In fact, he appears to have sacrificed “safe†projects for far more demanding films.
….
Take for example Rey in David Michôd’s The Rover. A far cry from the milky-white skin of his former vampire persona, Pattinson is grizzled and bloodied here in a performance widely praised. Kenneth Turan of The Los Angeles Times called the actor a “revelationâ€, describing Rey as a “damaged, unfocused individual who is the older man’s half-unwilling accomplice.â€
….
It might be surprising that Robert Pattinson hasn’t gone “off the rails†having achieved fame at a young age and had to endure the invasive eye of the tabloid press for most of his young adult life. But here is a man whose intelligence perhaps belies his formative years played out in the limelight of celebrity. Cronenberg talks of Pattinson’s intelligence as an actor, his ability to recognise the nuances of character, and understand why the director wants to do things a certain way. “He’s very well-read, and very well-versed in cinema – which I’m not sure his fans know,†he said.
…
It’s the teen fandom, beguiling boyish good looks, English charm, and multi-million dollar fantasy franchise versus a cinematic intelligence and diverse acting range, selfless attitude and philanthropic endeavour, that makes Robert Pattinson a “talent for the unexpectedâ€. Here is a man who’s the polar opposite of someone like Justin Bieber – all packaged, manufactured and commodified. Pattinson’s a genuine talent – a Hollywood good-guy whose success so far is just the tip of the iceberg.”
Bloody great read. Love the quotes, love the entire thing. It’s like Dan is in my head!
Thank you Maria. A great article that says all. No justification is necessary. I love this article and I love you Dan Stephens. xxxxxxxxxxxxx
😀 @Silvie was just what we needed.
Heh heh heh… I was going to ask, Maria, if you often wrote under an alias? Kidding aside, this Dan Stephens guy is one of the recently enlightened, and thank the stars for that! After yesterday’s disappointing news about ‘The Trap’, I was having niggling doubts about Rob’s project choices lately, but you know what? His career path speaks volumes about exactly what he wants to do, ‘fame’ and box-office popularity be buggered. How bloody rare is that in this day and age? Sure, I’d like to see him on-screen more (who around here doesn’t?) but no matter what he chooses to do (even directing) I’ll be following right along with him.
I’m so glad that I finally managed to drag my eyes away from that gif long enough to read Dan’s actual article! Great read, thanks Maria.
Thank you for the posting, Maria!
It’s so refreshing when someone “gets” Mr. Pattinson and sees what we have known all along. He doesn’t shy away from following his head and his heart on projects, he freely gives his all and we/I are so appreciative of the spectacular outcomes. We/I get so excited with anything new and get so bummed when it doesn’t pan out. We/I adore him. We/I adore his many talents. We/I have the upmost respect for and to him.
I hope he has an inkling about all of the wonderful people who feel this way.
Great read and spot on.
couldn’t agree more with Dan and all of you – thanks for the link. Fan-freaking-tastic read. Thanks Dan!! 🙂
What a wonderful read, love it. Smart man you are Dan, very smart 🙂
