It’s no surprise it slipped out of the Aussie Top 20 this week seeing as there’s a very very limited number of cinemas still screening if at all.  So the last Aussie box office figure is $210,380 as at Thursday 22 August 2012 thanks to UrbanCine

I’m curious to see what happens with Holy Motors since that was also at Cannes and had rave rave reviews did it not … yes I think it did and it’s only done $40,375 in its opening week (click on link above) (compared to Cosmopolis which opened with $92,556).

According to Box Office Mojo:

US as at 26 August 2012 – USD447,000

Foreign:  USD5,248,635

*Again, their figures are out – not sure where they obtained the Aussie figure from, but in any event, they are my calculations above.

It’s pretty frustrating that it’s only showing in Cinema Paris in Sydney now. I would love to catch it again but real life kinda takes precedence (blasphemous? LOL).. Thorough shame for a Cronenberg film. But it does seem to be what’s happening to a large number of art house movies coming to Australia.

I can only find 2 session times left in Brisbane now ~ and damn, I can’t get to either of them! Re Holy Motors, I’ve definitely seen more media/newspaper/magazine coverage of it than I ever did of Cosmopolis (and most of it positive), so I’m surprised it’s only done $40,000. I suspect they’ll give it a longer run regardless. Thanks for the update. Will be interesting to see how the US figures for Cosmopolis pan out.

Thank you once again @maria for doing all this homework for us. Just as Jane said it seems to be the way smaller arthouse movies are marketed (or NOT marketed I should say).
I am hoping his fans in the US will really go see it in droves and support Rob – it has opened in more cinemas there s as I recall.

Well, it looks to me like Cosmopolis has done rather well for the polarising type of movie it has been widely reviewed as being (if mentioned at all). Even the glowing reviews have admitted to its intellectual themes that aren’t for everyone.
Looking at those figures in population proportions, us Aussies did OK. I know I am already getting withdrawals from not seeing Eric
Go the Americans! lets see those numbers as high as possible

Holy Motors is showing at even less screens than Cosmopolis. UGH.

I had a friend tell me she went into Cosmopolis then walked out after 15 minutes then exchanged her ticket for Step Up 4. She wasn’t impressed with that either but really? 15 minutes? I know it’s not for everyone, but that’s not even giving it a chance!

Thanks so much @Maria for all the info and your efforts. Always very interesting….I’m no expert but I think its done very well considering lack of advertising and very limited screenings among other things. I’ve been having Eric withdrawal symptoms for some time now….6 weeks until UK DVD release….not that I’m counting *ahem*

Oooh I forgot tho say thanks for the update Maria!!! I agree Carmel, given our population AND the lack of advertising AND not all who would see it multiple times having that opportunity, I think Cosmopolis has done well here!!!

Thanks Maria. Considering there was no advertising at all we did OK. Cosmopolis is down to 3 sessions at Cinema Nova in Carlton. I’m hoping to see it again. I know Rob wants to do these Art house movies but I wish he would also consider doing something big. I’m being selfish, I know.

Considering it was limited release in lots of areas and minimal if any advertising I think thats pretty damn good. Thanks for taking the time for the figures Maria I always love to see these posts 🙂
