As Eric Hynes wrote in the cover story of our July/August issue, “At their best, the Safdies’ films don’t just mooch off the city’s story surplus—they also feed into it, contributing truly odd, activated extensions of urban life.” Their latest, Good Time, is no exception. In conversation with their lead actor Robert Pattinson, co-writer Ronald Bronstein, and Film Comment editor Nicolas Rapold at a special sneak preview, the filmmakers delineate and riff on the alchemic creation of a criminal anti-hero. Actively engaged in their native New York’s alternate (and everyday) realities, the Safdie Brothers trace the six-year long journey from the conception of to the making of Good Time—from a first encounter with Norman Mailer’s Executioner’s Song and binge-watched episodes of Cops to news of Richard Matt and David Sweat’s prison-break and the initial hard-core-addict look of Pattinson’s character.

Rob was a guest on Howard Stern’s radio show this morning as he began his promotion of “Good Time”, which has a U.S. release in N.Y. and L.A. on August 11. Below are 3 snippets from interview which have been uploaded to SoundClound. He “came clean” about what almost got him expelled from school, almost getting fired from “Twilight” because he was too serious, and the challenges of dating when you’re a celebrity. Robert Pattinson talks The Lost City of Z with Simon May of Kermode and Mayo on BBC5

Brian Lehrer discussed “Movies to Watch in 2017” on his show with Brandon Harris, a visiting assistant professor of film at SUNY Purchase and a contributing editor to Filmmaker magazine. Brandon recommends movies to see (and skip) in 2017, but at the very end of this podcast Brian asks Brandon “What’s your single thing you’re most excited about” and Brandon responds:

“Oh, wow, I would say that among everything coming in the New Year, I really cannot wait to see the new film coming out by Benny and Josh Safdie, which is a fugitive movie starring Robert Pattinson called Good Time, which A24 will probably release in the new year.  Really fantastic filmmakers.
