Rob surprised us today with his appearance with Bong Joon Ho at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, Nevada to promote Mickey17. Check out some photos of Rob with Bong Joon Ho at event. The very first trailer of Bong Joon-ho’s Mickey 17 was revealed at CinemaCon 2024. The director describes his sci-fi film as a “simple man’s story.” Robert Pattinson plays a common man named Mickey with a nerdy American accent who signs up to be an “expendable” in the future. He travels to distant planets and space stations doing handy work, but the caveat is that he’s expected to die doing these difficult missions. Each time he dies, a new clone is made and then given a new assignment. The title of the movie draws from this, as he dies 17 times in the plot. Everything goes well, with Mickey getting eaten and chopped up into different pieces across space. Things take a turn when two clones get made at the same time, Mickey 17 and Mickey 18.Across the trailer, we are introduced to the supporting cast, like Steven Yeun as a fellow worker who’s interested in Mickey’s life of constantly dying and being reborn as a clone. Mark Ruffalo plays a futuristic, crazed dictator-like character who’s married to an equally unhinged first lady played by Toni Collette. Ruffalo’s character is hellbent on getting rid of both Mickeys, since state policy requires that all duplicate clones be eradicated and for the person’s contract to be terminated, meaning death for good. Two Mickey clones, played by Robert Pattinson, get spun on a galactic adventure to survive.

Allow Robert Pattinson to introduce himself again… and again and again.
He plays more than a dozen versions of the same character, Mickey Barnes, in director Bong Joon Ho‘s upcoming sci-fi thriller “Mickey 17.”
Bong, the Oscar-winning director of “Parasite,” brought a wacky, thrilling first look at the film to CinemaCon, the annual exhibition trade show that’s currently unfolding in Las Vegas. Through an interpreter, the Korean filmmaker described “Mickey 17” as a “story about a simple man who ultimately ends up saving the world. It’s a strange type of hero’s journey.”
It’s based on Edward Ashton’s novel “Mickey 7,” but Bong opted to ever-so-slightly change the name of the film to “Mickey 17.” The number reflects how many times the main character dies, so Bong teased, “I killed him 10 more times!”

“I’m happy we can show the trailer on a big screen — and not on mobile phones,” he said to loud applause.
The never-before-seen footage of “Mickey 17” opens as Pattinson’s character applies for a job as an “expendable,” a disposable employee on a human expedition sent to colonize an ice planet. It doesn’t appear to be a coveted position, and even the company’s secretary is shocked that someone applied for this particular gig. “Once you die,” she explains to Mickey, “we print a new version of your body” with most memories intact.
On stage at Caesars Palace, Pattinson keyed into the motivation of his character, who is someone who has the “lowest expectations of his life, and life just keeps pushing those expectations lower and lower…” At various points in the trailer, Mickey goes through the wringer as he loses a hand (which then floats through space), gets doused in liquid metal, and encounters all kinds of dangerous ice on Niflheim, the planet where most of the film’s action takes place.
“Our entire life is a god-damn punishment,” he tells himself in the two-minute clip. Later in the trailer, Pattinson’s character implies he may not have read all of the fine print before he agreed to become an expendable.
Things go awry as one version of Mickey doesn’t die and a replacement clone comes to take his place, leading Pattinson to face off against another Pattinson.
“I don’t like you, but I’m you,” Pattinson, with an unplacable accent, tells his duplicate. He responds to himself, “I’m going to kill you.”
Turns out, it’s not so easy to destroy one of the Mickeys. One person offers, “Rock paper scissors, and we’ll shoot the loser?”
For what it’s worth, one of the Mickeys (it’s impossible to know which) laments that getting obliterated doesn’t become easier over time.
“I’m sure you’re used to it by now,” Mark Ruffalo, who co-stars in the film, says to Pattinson, “but what’s it like to die?”
Not so. Pattinson retorts, “On my 17th go around, I hate dying.”
When asked what made Pattinson, the star of franchises like “The Batman,” “Twilight” and “Harry Potter,” the perfect person to play Mickey, Bong cracked: “He’s got this crazy thing in his eyes.”
The director elaborated, “I felt like he could do all the different variations of Mickey in the story. He’s such a creative man.”
Pattinson called Bong his “hero” and recalled that before signing onto the movie, he was told, “You’re going to love the script, but the part is impossible.”
“That’s very exciting to me,” Pattinson teased.

The many facets of Robert Pattinson were on display in the first trailer for Mickey 17, the upcoming film from Bong Joon Ho that delves into human printing, identity and space colonization.
Bong made his first trip to CinemaCon to show off the trailer, with Bong saying it’s the story of “a simple man who ultimately ends up saving the world.”

“The number is the number of times he dies. I killed him ten times more,” Bong said to laughs from the crowd. “It’s a sci-fi movie, but it’s a human story.”
The trailer, which was not released outside the room, was set to Frank Sinatra, which added levity to some rather violent scenes, such as Mickey losing a hand and being dumped alive into liquid metal (with his consent).
Mickey 17 has been the subject of much curiosity, given that it is Bong’s followup to the best picture-winning Parasite, yet has taken quite awhile for a first look to emerge. Post-production delays pushed the film off a March 2024 release date to Jan. 31, 2025, a date that turned heads given that this does not position Oscar-winner Bong’s latest as an awards contender. The film also stars Mark Ruffalo, Steven Yeun, Naomie Ackie and Toni Collette.
Pattinson, who is a Warners partner as the star of The Batman and its upcoming sequel, called Bong’s script “one of the funniest, bizarre sci-fi scripts I’ve ever read in my life.”
Pattinson essentially plays two characters — Mickey 17 and Mickey 18, and while they are genetically identical, Pattinson gave them different characteristics. Mickey 17, he says, is beaten down by life but is happy to be part of a team, while 18 is more like “playing an evil brother” who is “out of control.”

They further announced that it will be released in IMAX.
The trailer was a tongue-in-cheek, screwball dystopia of sorts, all scored to Frank Sinatra’s “Ain’t That a Kick In the Head.” We see Pattinson as Mickey, who is an Expendable: a disposable employee on a human expedition sent to colonize the ice world Niflheim. Whenever a mission is too dangerous — even suicidal — the crew turns to Mickey. After one iteration dies, a new body is regenerated with most of his memories intact.

The twist is that Mickey 17 inadvertently happens to be alive at the same time as Mickey 18, with Pattinson in a dual role each with different accents, that leads to even more mayhem as the people of this society have to deal with his “multiples.” Steven Yeun’s character even suggests that they simply play “Rock Paper Scissors” and kill the losers.

“Mickey 17” opens in theaters January 31, 2025. It’s unclear if the film will be screened at any festivals prior to its wide theatrical release from Warner Bros.
The trailer, which features a morbid and dark sense of humor, shows Pattinson as Mickey, a man whose job is to be an “expendable,” a man who works on a spaceship until he dies on the job and is replaced by a clone of himself. As an expendable, he is sent out on the most dangerous jobs, where he has his limbs chopped off by space debris and devoured by aliens.
But then something unexpected happens: one of his clones doesn’t die. Now there are multiples of Mickey: Mickey 17 and Mickey 18…and they don’t get along.
“In the story, no one can know there are multiples,” Pattinson said at CinemaCon. “Mickey 17 is a person who has no expectations in his life, but his life keeps pushing his expectations even lower.”

Bong Joon-ho's film kills Robert Pattinson's Mickey over & over (the character's job), set to the tone of, "Ain't That A Kick in the Head." Eventually, there are two of him, creating a problem on which has to die. Looks great.
