E!News Shares Some BTS “Secrets” About Robert Pattinson ~ Water for Elephants (2011)
I don’t know if these are really secrets, we all knew Rob played Reese’s son in Vanity Fair (even though his scene was cut from the film) and that Rob had a cold during the love scene, but did I know Channing Tatum auditioned? To be honest I may have, but who can really remember all the details from 2011. Water for Elephants was released on 22 April 2011 and as a throwback E!News ran an article on 14 Secrets About Water for Elephants. Below are the excerpts relationg to Rob:
2. Robert Pattinson, meanwhile, was one of the last actors to join in the role of Jacob (no, not that werewolf), with Lawrence admitting, “In all honesty, I was skeptical after Twilight, because I didn’t know, because of how stylized those movies are, I didn’t know what he could do behind all the contacts and make-up and stuff. When I sat down with him, I realized that he’s quite a bit like the Jacob character himself,” he said of his film’s lead. “He’s a really good guy, and even with all the craziness, he’s still very humble, still very comfortable in his own skin.”
3. However, this wasn’t the first time Witherspoon and Pattinson worked together. The Twilight star played her estranged son in 2004’s Vanity Fair, but his part was cut from the final version and the deleted scene ended up as a DVD extra.
“He was walking down this corridor and I turned to the director and I said, ‘That’s my son? He’s so good looking,'” she recalled in an interview with Entertainment Tonight. “I was like, ‘He’s so hot!'”
4. Channing Tatum, Andrew Garfield and Emile Hirsch all reportedly auditioned for the role of Jacob.Â
…
8. The filming of Marlena and Jacob’s love scene was anything but romantic.
“I was doing it when I had a really bad cold,” Pattinson told MTV at the time. “My nose is running all over the place, and it was in one of the additional photography scenes, and Reese had this wig on, and literally, I was wiping my nose on her wig.”Â
9. Witherspoon scored major points with daughter Ava Phillipe when she introduced the then-10-year-old to Pattinson on the movie’s set, along with her younger brother, Deacon.
“Ava seemed especially excited to meet him,” a source told People at the time. “The filming with Rob is going really well and Reese was excited for the kids to meet him.”
Thanks @Monsieur_HJ for heads up
Rob really was the perfect Jacob. And Ava Phillipe was clearly blessed with excellent taste from a VERY young age!
Sue, yep he was. I am sure it was not difficult for Rob to play the good guy Jacob either because he is a good guy.
I don’t know if we are allowed to put up links here (I added some ‘space’ in the URL so it would post) but this video was new to me and from Cosmopolis time. Pay attention to what Sarah Gadon says and I wish others had too at the time, then it would not have been a surprise that he is a good actor. Just noticed it says it is from Estoril Film Festival and I have been to Estoril!! wow.

Thanks, Maria! Sorry about the duplicate. Speaking of good guy Rob/Jacob, I know it is water under the bridge, a long time ago, and all that, but since he is still my new discovery, I am gobsmacked how a certain person could hurt him publicly like they did in 2012.
Continuing my musings from my previous comments, there is another video in that series from the link above, ‘David Cronenberg 5/5’, where Paul G tells how he and Rob had watched the same youtube video as research, independently. That was awesome to hear, great minds think alike and all that. 2012 Cronenberg was the big turning point for Rob and that certain someone surely knew to rain on that parade, maybe that was the intention. Media talked about that sh*t instead of talking about his acting chops, his Cannes appearance for the rest of that year.
BTW, in the video series linked above, I forget which part, David Cronenberg says that Cosmopolis’ cinematographer Peter Suschitzky’s son Adam Suschitzky shot Little Ashes. I don’t think this connection was made known before. So David did not know of Pattinson only from his Twilight fame. He got other inside information about how good an actor he was. Now I kind of understand his confidence in RP.
Hi PM – yes you can add links but it just means your comment won’t auto approve as our spam filter thinks it’s suspicious.
I have a recollection about the Little Ashes connection with the Suschitzky’s but back in 2012 I believe it was still hard to find Little Ashes to watch unless you bought the DVD. I have to admit to finding it “somewhere on the internet” back in 2009 and that’s how I first watched it. I was spellbound by it and the last 10 minutes of that film still kills me more so than Remember Me. I need to rewatch it as it’s been too long and it’s one of my favourite performances from Rob.
Hi Maria, I am not surprised you knew and am sure you have those videos tucked away here. It is just that I found that link between DC and the cinematographer for Little Ashes today, :). You are also right about RP’s last scene in Little Ashes which is remarkable and he delivers in all the tough scenes, as does Beltran. You must have seen Portrait of a Lady on Fire which depicts love and romance between two women and it got rave reviews. Little Ashes does the same and more for romance, seduction, and angst between two men and it is all so natural and organic and of course, sad. I especially liked the Lorca character and Beltran. He is apparently 6’6″ tall and RP looks short next to him. LOL.
I am a bit irritated I can’t find Denis movies on youtube like Chocolat or Beau Travail. I rented ‘White Material’ and it was so good. Watched it multiple times. Huppert is superb and the image that stays with you is of her standing on the ladder on the back of the bus. OMG, that was perfection! It transports you to that climate/environs and it is as if you are riding the bus with her. The Rover has similar vibe. If anything, my RP research (obsession? ;), well topic du jour is RP and I know I will move on to another in due course) has opened me up to more contemporary directors, movies, artists, and movie making.
We saw “The Piano Teacher” by Haneke last night, second movie that features piano prominently since I last saw ‘Beat that my heart skipped’. I can see RP getting excited about these types of scripts, maybe he should learn to speak French. Only French can make these psych thrillers as they only can. They also have such meatier parts for older artists like Huppert which Hollywood never does, (saw her in Elle couple of weeks ago).
Rob speaks a little French @PM so he should definitely brush up. I’d love him to work with Haneke and I also love Huppert. You should watch her in his Happy End. Agree re French films. Hopefully Rob has something up his sleeve that we will find out about soon.
Maria, when I was going through your blog pages from the WFE times, I saw the pics of Rob carrying that red book and tried to figure out what the title was from the bits and pieces I could see in the pics (I figured out the first words were ‘My Friend’ and searched google for titles starting with that but was not successful).
Hi PM – it’s My Friend the Mercenary by James Brabazon. And I removed the link you had in your comment because we actually have a page about books read by Rob (and books of Rob’s films under the “Books” tab on the site) but for ease https://www.robertpattinsonau.com/books/books-read-by-rob/
Thanks Maria, duh! I see it, should have known that that info would already be here. 🙂
