According to The Wrap:
“Robert Pattinson has been cast in “Good Time,†a new caper film from indie filmmakers Josh and Benny Safdie, an individual with knowledge of the casting told TheWrap Thursday.
Pattinson will play a bankrobber named Connie who is trying to evade the police as they close in on him. Sebastian Bear-McClard of Elara Pictures is producing, while Josh Safdie and Ronald Bronstein wrote the script.”
“Robert Pattinson will star in the neo-grindhouse caper Good Time, which will be directed by Josh and Benny Safdie.
The indie film centers on a bank robber’s flailing efforts to evade the dragnet closing in on him. Pattinson will star as Connie.
Josh Safdie and Ronald Bronstein wrote the script for the film, which will be produced by Sebastian Bear-MCclard of Elara Pictures.
The Safdie brothers (pictured below), who recently signed with WME, are indie filmmakers whose most recent project, Heaven Knows What, is in theaters. The critically acclaimed film following a young heroin addict (Arielle Holmes) who finds love in the streets of New York was released by Radius-TWC. It won the C.I.C.A.E Award at the Venice Film Festival and also played at the Toronto Film Festival and New York Film Festival.
The directing team’s indie projects include Daddy Longlegs, which played at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival and the 2010 Sundance Film Festival; the doc Lenny Cook, which followed a star high school basketball player and played at Tribeca and Venice before airing on Showtime in February 2014; and their debut feature, The Pleasure of Being Robbed, which premiered at SXSW in 2008 and also played at the Cannes sidebar Directors’ Fortnight before airing on IFC.”
Quenching his need for auteur-driven material, after recent gigs with Brady Corbet and James Gray, Robert Pattinson becomes the first player to join the Safdie Bros.’s thrilling new gun powder friendly title. Steeped in the exploitation film subgenre of neo-grindhouse, Good Time will be produced by Elara Pictures’ Sebastian Bear-McClard (currently batting 1000 with his first cred being Heaven Knows What). Further casting announcements could arrive shortly as the project is reeved up for international sales at the upcoming edition for TIFF.
Gist: Written by Josh Safdie and Ronald Bronstein, this centers on a bankrobber’s flailing efforts to evade the dragnet closing in on him. Pattinson will star as Connie.
Worth Noting: The Safdies were already two degrees of separation from Pattinson as Caleb Landry Jones was featured in (son of David) Brandon Cronenberg’s Antiviral.”
“Few actors coming off the global recognition and financial clout provided by a record-breaking franchise have been able to do so with as much discernment as Robert Pattinson. Films fromDavid Cronenberg, Werner Herzog, Anton Corbijn, and David Michôd are under his belt — and James Gray and Harmony Korine collaborations in the works — and we now have another to add to the forthcoming slate.
THR reports that the actor will lead Good Time, the next picture from Josh and Benny Safdie, who are coming off one of the year’s best films, Heaven Knows What. Described as an “indie neo-grindhouse caper,†it follows a “bankrobber’s flailing efforts to evade the dragnet closing in on him.†Although no additional details are made available yet, we assume Pattinson’s character, Connie, is the bank robber.
It’s scripted by Josh Safdie and Ronald Bronstein, and they’ve previously noted there are plans to shoot this fall, presumably after work on James Gray’s Lost City of Z wraps up.”
[Robert Pattinson] yet again signed up to work with auteur talent, and I have to say, the prospect of this one sounds pretty great.
Filmmakers Josh and Benny Safdie made waves with their addiction drama “Heaven Knows What” and it has attracted the right attention, with Pattinson signing up for their next film, “Good Time.” Described as a “neo-grindhouse” flick (I’m already halfway sold on that alone), the actor will play Connie, a bank robber to tries to escape as a dragnet beings to draw closer and closer. That premise sounds perfectly like the stuff of B-movies and I’m intrigued to see how the Safdies tackle that kind of material.
No word on when it might shoot, but presumably it’ll have to wait until Pattinson has wrapped James Gray‘s “Lost City Of Z” which starts shooting later this year.”

According to a recent Reddit Q&A done by the Safdie brothers in response to the question whether they are doing “Uncut Gems” next.  They responded “We also plan to make a film … in this coming fall”:

See there is always a reason … always that things happen.
A bank robbery caper *clapshands*
Look out for our “Good Time” film page because it’s coming ….
*dances* I LOOOVE waking up to news like this. A bank robber, ooooh sounds brilliant, cannot wait to hear more! Love the gif too Maria, perfect 🙂 🙂
OMG! That is incredible news! Rob is the lead too. We haven’t seen that in his last projects. What a day this is turning out to be
Rob + Good Time = Perfect!!!
Great to read this news, another one to look forward to.
This is great news, agree with all of the above. :))))xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
*CARTWHEELS THROUGH THE INTERNET* FANTASTIC news – thanks so much Maria, what a beautiful, wonderful post – so excited to hear more. Sounds bloody brilliant already 😉
I’m going to be cautiously optimistic outwardly (though inside I’m doing what Jules just wrote) and I really really hope this film happens for everyone involved. In this uncertain economic climate, it’s a wonder any films get made at all. Oh, sweetie, we’re all pulling for you on this one. Fingers and toes crossed!
One door closes, and another one opens. We just have to keep faith in Rob and his decisions. He has done well so far in the last few years.
Agree @Julie I always believed there was a reason Rob is no longer doing Brimstone. Perhaps this main role was similar to the other and he didn’t want to be typecast. You can tell Rob is chomping at the bit to play a criminal. Again, let’s see what is happening re The Trap. I saw E! claims a source told them he was filming The Trap, but anyone who knows me knows what I think about E! and their supposed “sources”.
