I don’t know how I’m going to contain my excitement for this film.  I loved spaghetti westerns too – not that I’m expecting this to be a comedy but the Trinity films with Terence Hill & Bud Spencer are some of my favourite classics to come out of the 70s.  Anyway, I digress.  Martin Koolhoven was recently interviewed by Dutch newspaper @nrccultuur and we find out a little bit more about Martin, Rob and Brimstone.  Here are some extracts (sorry I used Google translate):

Ha I think most of us have to put our hands up for this comment below:

“Then last weekend when it was announced that “former” teen idol Robert Pattinson had a role in Brimstone Koolhoven directly received several hundred ‘fairly active’ Twitter followers.”

About Martin and Brimstone:

…  He goes out of seventy days of shooting in May, June and July on locations in Canada and Europe.   Koolhoven: “Guy has already started with a dialect coach, Mia soon begins to learn sign language.” The budget of 10 million euros he thinks with “this cast probably be able to pick up in Hollywood, but I do like to keep control and final cut for the film “.

Brimstone is the first film of Koolhoven since Oorlogswinter that attracted nearly 840,000 visitors in 2008 and was also viewed in other countries. In the previous seven years Koolhoven had five feature films and a made for TV movie, from arthouse film Amnesia to multicultural comedy The schnitzelparadijs . “I was then offered of everything, including a British romcom. I was rummaging through, but I was wondering: what do I really want? That was a western. “

A western take on not Drunen: it had to be an international production. Grasduinend available by western scripts Koolhoven came across a western comedy – “a little with Tarantino vocabulary” – which he liked. But during a year went by rewriting “the postmodern tone” stand against him and he started to think about their own script. “I love spaghetti westerns. In the sixties, which were perceived as more realistic, but that she was not unique. They were sweltering and violent, but mostly Italian. If I make a western, there had to be a Dutch perspective.”

The result, writing after three years, was Brimstone , a woman in the late nineteenth century in the Wild West is being hunted by an obsessed priest. …

Koolhoven: “But it was especially important that people were reading my screenplay. … I have no idea how the game works in Hollywood and my name means little there. ”

Producer Nik Powell advised him to take a British casting director and suggested a few names. It was Des Hamilton, whose recently cast films for Andrea Arnold ( Wuthering Heights ), Lars von Trier (Nymphomaniac ) and Nicolas Winding Refn ( Only God Forgives ). Then it went fast.

In November began the process. Koolhoven “Des was enthusiastic, the scenario went around in Holllywood.  Guy Pearce would really like that role. A great actor, but it also helps that everyone likes to work with him. He knows Pattinson from The Rover, and Pattinson knows Wasikowska from Maps to the Stars.  Not that I have chosen it, but they are all very down to earth . You sit a few months together somewhere on the prairie. “

@Sue – I know what you mean. Rob and Australia go together so well, that was my initial reaction too. As long as he keeps is beautiful English accent, I’m on board with the whole Aussie thing
