Thanks to Vale from Twilight Poison, we have a translation of an article from GLAMOUR Spain magazine. In this article, Rob talks about how he’s affected by fame (again…), his hair (why does this have to ALWAYS come up?) and love (and this one is interesting, believe me).
Here is the article:
Rob talks about how he’s only liked two girls in his life, he talks briefly about his last relationship and about his upcoming movie Little Ashes. Complete translation after the jump!
They say this British guy started to work in the industry because he wanted to meet girls. What he didn’t know is that his life was going to change forever once he got cast as the teenage vampire Edward Cullen, heroe to millions of teenagers thanks to the famous Twilgiht saga written by Stephenie Meyer. We’re in the city of Los Angeles and we speak with this peculiar actor that will become our Salvador Dali very soon.
Does Twilight remind you of your real life and high school, when two people are attracted to each other with such energy?
Yes, although I had really bad luck with girls, the ones I liked hated me and the ones that liked me were not my type. But that’s something that I still go through, I like girls that I shouldn’t like. But I’m learning and now I take my time before I let the girl know.
Do you believe in obsessive love?
Yes, but only from a girl’s point of view. I don’t think men are like that. Not many men read Stephenie Meyer books anyway.
You’re right. That’s what I was going to ask you. Do you believe this story was tailor made for young girls?
Yes, it’s so weird and funny. Afte reading the books I’ve been asking myself why do women act like that, why do they behave like that, especially younger girls. They turn into freaks when it comes to boys. I like nomal girls who don’t pretend to be anything else.
Would like to live forever?
No, although it does have its advantages.
Do you understand the attraction and mystery around vampires?
I’ve never been insterested in vampires, although I understand why they’re so appealing to some people.
How are you handling being the new It Boy, being in so many covers of magazines now all over the world?
I don’t mind, my character is so good and he deserves to be admired. From the moment I signed up for this I knew what I was getting myself into. Edward is a vampire, he’s not a hero like Superman, he’s a vampire in love who wants to be normal.
It took him 90 years for him to find love. Do you believe in love at first sight?
That’s so boring! I think we all have the right to fall in love several times. The conventional idea of love, the idea of being with somebody for the rest of your life and love her forever sounds so silly to me, and so unrealistic. I think you can love ten people at the same time (laughs).
What are your bigest passions?
I’m boring. I like reading, watching movies and playing the piano.
People say you’ll leave Orlando Bloom without work pretty soon…
I don’t think this will happen to me. I don’t want to lose control of my life, I don’t care how much money I’m offered. Well, I’m kidding, actually. Because if I had massive ammounts of money and success, I’d still reach for the same goals and I’d be able to hide better. (TwilightPoison note: his answer sounds very strange, we think he missunderstood the question, or the interviewer’s question was not formulated properly, because it sounds like he thought the interviewer was saying that he’d be the next Orlando Bloom and not find a job after having so much success, not that he would leave Orlando with no other roles. Oh Rob… it was probably not your fault lol.)
What would you be capable of doing for love?
I don’t know, climb a mountain?
Would it scare you to fall in love like the characters in Twilight?
Yes, because it’s an obsessive love, a sick love. When you fall in love and you lose yourself like that. Imagine falling in love like that!
Do you get hit on by difficult women?
I’m crazy about independent women who don’t require too much attention.
Have you ever used the phrase “I’m an actor†as a pick up line?
Not, that phrase doesn’t wok here in LA – everybody is an actor here.
Are you planning on going to college?
Yes, but I’m planning on taking it slowly, probably when I’m 28. As an actor you have to take advantage of the opportunities you get and not letting them pass by.
How did you feel at 17?
I felt increadibly awkward all the time. I’ve always been a very edgy person, especially in those years that I didn’t find my place, everything scared me. I just started reading again my journals from when I was 17….
Do you talk about love in them?
Actually, no. I’ve only been attracted to two women in my whole life.
Do you remember the first time you loved someone?
Yes. It’s weird to enjoy your first love, especially if the relationship lasts a long time. Our relationship was really beautiful, but we didn’t have an obsessive love like in the movie. Her presence in my life made me very happy for three years. Now it’s kind of hard to talk about it.
Tell me about that hair…
I always have weird hair: Harry Potter, this one and Dali.
I’ll have to disagree with Rob on some points, here:
First of all: I read, watch movies and play a bit of piano… and I don’t think that’s boring or that I am :). Give yourself more credit, Rob, come on! A girl loves a boy who reads, watches movies and plays the piano! Well, this one does :D!
Second: I agree that girls turn into freaks… and boys into pigs… we should really live on different planets and never have contact with each other! Hahaha!
I actually think we tend to freak out more than men because we are generally designed to be caretakers, hence we do a lot more over-thinking and worrying than men do (but it’s just my theory).
Third: in this interview he says he likes women that are indipendent and don’t need much attention, in another he says he is possessive. Can the two things actually go together? I’m sure I must be missing something, because I don’t understand it…
Fourth: I think love itself is passion and obsession, at least at the beginning. When you fall in love with a person you want to be with them as much as possible, if you can do without them, then maybe you don’t really love them…
Fifth: I agree that you can fall in love multiple times, but I do believe that you can love and be with one person for the rest of your life. My parents did, my grandparents did. And to keep the family tradition, I hope I will to :)!
My take on all this is that I don’t think Rob has really, seriously, madly fallen in love with anyone, yet. Not even the one he finds hard to talk about. I do wish for him that it will happen, some time, because it’s a life-changing experience and because I selfishly hope he will bring that into his characters, once he knows what it means to really love someone.
And I so wish I could discuss these points with Rob in person, of course! :D:D:D
“I don’t know, climb a mountain?”
Hahaha! Our very own Sir Hillary…
Athena you have allot of valid points in your comments. I think we sometimes forget that he is only 22.
Third: He does contradict himself here.
It would have been good to see this interview on video, see what type of mood he was in. So much can get lost in the translation.
Yeah, I have just remembered that he is only 22! He seems to be so beyond his years, sometimes, that I forget!
In the light of this epiphany(hahaha), I posted this elsewhere, which is basically my conclusion (in part mentioned above as well), so far:
My opinion is that Rob has never really fallen head-over-heels in love with anyone yet, despite his past relationship(s). I think he might be a bit confused and have contradictory ideas on the subject, because he does not yet know what it means to really love someone, to feel that passion, that obsession. Being he so very young, I think it’s perfectly normal.
So, I think I would take what he says on this matter with a grain of salt and not as spilled gold, as we say in Italy, not because he is not being honest, but because he does not seem to have a definitive idea on it, so when asked, I think he will say what he feels is true for him in that moment, which might be different at the time of the next interview.
I am glad you understand that the points I made above are not judgements or attacks on Rob. They are more points that I would raise with him if we were having a normal conversation, aimed at getting to know each other, understanding what he means and who he is, not at bashing him or anything. It is just the kind of conversation I used to have with my friends in Italy.
Athena, your comments on Rob above are fine and honest.
I like how random some of his answers can be in some of his interviews, its very entertaining.
LOL! Spilled gold. Grain of salt indeed! Rob must be tired of answering the same type of questions on love. I reckon he would keep what he honestly feels on the subject to himself.
I would love if he come to Australia for the girls ( Cilla, Michelle, Shanna & Maria) to interview him. Given how dedicated they are to Rob as a person and following his career, It would be great to have a Australian interview with just quality questions. I am sure the girls have their own personal lists in the hope that it may happen one day.
True! You can never tell what he will come up with! “Climb a mountain?” I’m still laughing at that one! And he thinks he’s boring… HA!
I have to agree with you that, by the smart man he is, he must surely keep his deepest thoughts to himself.
It is hard to tell, sometimes, if he means what he says or if it’s just part of his sense of humour! I constantly have to keep reminding myself that he is British and their sense of humour is more… “oblique”, for want of a better word, than ours!
In any case, I inevitably get a good giggle whenever I listen to his interviews, and I am always left with a smile on my face :D!
If the girls could interview him, it would be awesome! 😀
