“I Just Like Being Able to Hide” Robert Pattinson interviewed on the New York Good Time Red Carpet
The beginning of the video is the photographers screaming at Robert, but at about 0.47 Robert talks about discovering the Safdie Bros, what it’s like to be able to hide as an actor in a character and how he’s attracted to unusual characters.
*Updated with longer video* – Josh and Benny talk about the Kimmel joke and Robert at the end says his career as a comedian is over.

On taking a chance with the Safdie Bros
“I could just tell. I could tell that their potential hadn’t been realized by the wider world yet in their last movie. I just seen the trailer of their last movie when I agreed to do this. I could just feel – you could tell the performances were like really on the cusp of being a documentary, and I just really wanted to do that kind of a performance.”
On losing himself in a role
“That’s kind of what I think acting is. I guess could be either a performative actor, who is just sort of very detailed in getting a point across. Or I just like being able to hide, I mean maybe because that’s just been my skillset I’ve developed over the last ten years. I mean it’s so satisfying when someone can look at you and kind of see something, somebody that’s not you in reality, not just in the movie.”
On playing unusual characters
“It’s funny because I always just think Edward is a pretty weird character himself. I’ve always been attracted to unusual characters. I want to do things – I want to do things that are really, really far away from myself. I mean, not theta I particularly know who I am. So I don’t really know how I play myself. Yeah, I think whenever you see a role that is just like a mountain to climb, I think it’s always – it’s very satisfying.”
Josh and Benny on Robert Pattinson on Jimmy Kimmel Live
“It was a joke. Rob has a weird sense of humor and he thought it would be funny to take, you know, run with an idea. It was actually kind of like an in-joke with me. I told him make fun of me on national television. I didn’t know what it would amount to, but it did you know. It’s weird because I don’t want people to think of this movie as the dog dick movie, because the way his character looks at dogs is very serious, and…”
Benny Safdie: “There’s nothing in the movie that would at all hint at it, so that’s what’s so surprising.”
Robert on regretting his joke on Jimmy Kimmel Live
“Actually, it’s just like – I couldn’t have woken up to something more embarrassing the next day, and also just that’s the end – it’s the end of my career as a comedian.”
Thanks Posh.
Just as Rob did with the Safdies, maybe he caught the eye of a comic director. His potential also hasn’t been realised.
