Remember back on 9 December 2014 we mentioned that Little White Lies listed “LIFE” as a must see in 2015. I’ve seen a couple more “must see” lists and thought I’d put them all in one post:
 “LIFE
Directed by Anton Corbijn
Released 25 September, 2015
We still shiver when recollecting the luscious monochrome of Corbijn’s Ian Curtis pic, Control. Interim efforts may not have packed so intense a punch but the legacy of his debut lives on. The Dutch photographer created the effect of characters moving through a world so textured that it seemed to have its own pulse. For Life — the story of a photographer and his relationship with James Dean, Dane DeHaan plays the original rebel without a cause opposite reformed heartthrob, Robert Pattinson. Let’s see what he makes of them.â€
DAZED (Films to Watch out for in 2015):
“LIFE
Ex-photographer and Control helmer Anton Corbijn seems like the perfect person to direct Life. That’s basically because it’s based on the real-life bromance between Life magazine photographer Dennis Stock and icon of cool James Dean. Robert Pattinson plays Stock, Dane DeHaan is James Dean, and they head up a cast that includes Ben Kingsley as tough-talking studio head Jack Warner, and Joel Edgerton as picture editor/photography pioneer John G Morris. Expect this one to clean up when awards season comes around in 2016.

48. Maps to the Stars (Release: 2/27/2015)
The Pitch: David Cronenberg taking a bite out of Hollywood culture is a welcome puncture wound. Now in his fourth or fifth or sixth creative incarnation, the director has recently been aggressive in lampooning modernity (see Cosmopolis, A Dangerous Method). He pairs here with Julianne Moore, Mia Wasikowska, John Cusack and more.”
Ministry of Truth Film Ratings (My 25 Most Anticipated Films of 2015):
“Queen of the Desert
Directed and Written by Werner Herzog, Starring Nicole Kidman, James Franco and Robert Pattinson
Synopsis- A chronicle of Gertrude Bell’s life, a traveler, writer, archaeologist, explorer, cartographer, and political attaché for the British Empire at the dawn of the twentieth century.
#1 Reason I’m Excited - In Herzog I trust, but it’s particularly interesting that his collaboration with Kidman has led to Herzog’s great regret over not working with more lead actresses in the past.
Favorite Herzog Film – Aguirre, the Wrath of God”
The Toronto Star (12 Reasons to Go to the Movies this Year):
“Life
(fall/winter): Anton Corbijn rose to fame as the legend-making photographer of such bands as U2 and Joy Division, so he’d have a natural affinity for this 1955-set drama, penned by Candy’s Luke Davies, of a Life magazine photog (Robert Pattinson) who is assigned to cover rising star James Dean (Dane DeHaan). The two set out on a cross-country road trip, in a film that sounds like it could be the thoughtful buddy pic that On the Road (starring Corbijn find Sam Riley) failed to be.”
Fandor/Keyframe (Daily | Most Anticipated Films of 2015):
“On Tom Shone‘s list (These Violent Delights):
Life (no distributor) — dir.  Anton Corbijn w/ Robert Pattinson Dane DeHaan  Ben Kingsley, Joel Edgerton

“Werner Herzog‘s Queen of the Desert. Robert Pattinson plays T.E. Lawrence, who, Herzog says, “is a supporting character. He meets the main character in my film, Gertrude Bell, an adventurous geographer of the early 20th century performed by Nicole Kidman. This is an epic film with much happening in the Arabian desert.â€

The movie is a biography based on Gertrude Bell’s life who was a traveler, a writer, an archaeologist, an explorer, a cartographer and a political attache for the British Empire at the dawn of the twentieth century.
The movie is scheduled for 2015 release. (Maria: Not sure where they got that release date of 13 August 2015).â€
“6. Life
Control director Anton Corbijn didn’t want to do Life, a film about the friendship between magazine photographer Dennis Stock [Robert Pattinson] and James Dean [Dane Dehaan] if it were just another tragic star biopic. Instead, the idea is more akin to Driving Mr. Dean. It’s 1955 and Life magazine photographer Stock has persuaded the actor to take a road trip from Los Angeles to New York and his native Indiana. On the road, a bond develops between snapper and subject in a film that with Corbijn at the helm and two young actors hitting their stride should have quality written all over it. It will also look handsome as hell, obvs.”

“18. Life
Former rock photographer turned acclaimed director Anton Corbijn focuses his lens on the life story of a fellow snapper: Magnum’s Dennis Stock (Robert Pattinson), and specifically his friendship with his great subject, James Dean (Dane DeHaan). Stock shot the now-iconic Life magazine images of Dean prior to the release of East of Eden (1955).

“9 Queen of the Desert
We’ve not seen any of this movie yet but Nicole Kidman’s role as early 20th century traveller, writer and archaeologist Gertrude Bell is the sort of part that gets nominated for Oscars. She’s in exalted company, with James Franco playing aristocrat Henry Cadogan, Robert Pattinson as T.E. Lawrence and Damian Lewis as Bell’s lover Charles Doughty-Wylie. No news on the release date yet but keep your eyes peeled.”
FlavorPill (11 Films to Get Excited About):
“Queen of the Desert
Werner Herzog has made a career out of exploring humankind’s peripheries, the moments when people descend to their lowest or aspire to the species highest possible nature, pushing themselves beyond the ordinary pale of their peers. For his upcoming Queen of the Desert, the idiosyncratic filmmaker teamed with Nicole Kidman, James Franco, Robert Pattinson, and Damian Lewis to give the life of adventurer Gertrude Bell (kind of the female version of the famous Lawrence of Arabia) the Herzog treatment. It worked with Dieter Dengler.”
HeyUGuys (The Must See Films of 2015 Which are Still A Secret Films)
“8. Queen of the Desert
The truly great and universally acclaimed Werner Herzog (Grizzly Man, Rescue Dawn) returns to narrative directorial duties for his forthcoming biographical drama.
Penning his own screenplay, the film stars James Franco, Nicole Kidman, Robert Pattinson and Damien Lewis; quite a line-up right? It’ll document the chronicles of Gertrude Bell’s life as a traveller, explorer, archeologist, writer and political attache for the British Empire at the dawn of the twentieth century.
With such a skilled filmmaker at the helm and a brilliantly dense cast relaying the life and legacy of Bell, this looks set to be a hallmark release in 2015.”

Pop Culture (Underrated Cinematographers Poised to Make it Big in 2015)
“But Christensen’s big coming out party will most likely be her first collaboration with director Anton Corbijn (Control, A Most Wanted Man) on Life. … Corbijn’s Life will follow a week in the life of photographer Dennis Stock (Robert Pattinson) who’s been assigned by Life magazine to shoot portraits of James Dean (Dane DeHaan). Corbijn, himself, is a famous portrait photographer, so it’s a great match with Christensen. They both favor lengthier takes where the whole frame can be absorbed, either in stillness, or by close zooms in-camera. The advice Christensen received from Vinterberg? “It doesn’t have to be realistic, but it has to be real.†Sounds like life, man.

The Observants (101 Movies to Look Forward to in 2015):
“7. Queen of the Desert
Werner Herzog (Auirre Der Zorn Gottes, Grizzly Man, Nosferatu)?
With? James Franco, Nicole Kidman, Robert Pattinson …
Why? New work by Werner Herzog, therefore! Queen of the Desert, his first work of fiction since the wonderfully bizarre My Son My Son, What Have Ye Done and revolves around the adventures of Gertrude Bell, a ontdekkingsreizster, writer, archeologist and political attaché Great Britain during the beginning of the twentieth century. Nicole Kidman will play the role himself, while young violence assist her in the form of James Franco and Robert Pattinson.
When? Unknown
64. Life
Of? Anton Corbijn (A Most Wanted Man, Control)
With? Robert Pattinson, Dane DeHaan, Joel Edgerton, Ben Kingsley
Why? With Life follows Dutch photographer / director Anton Corbijn strong spy thriller A Most Wanted Man on. The film follows the friendship between Life photographer Dennis Stock and Hollywood icon James Dean during the early 50s Robert Pattinson plays Stock, while Dane DeHaan (from include The Place Beyond the Pines) takes on the role of Dean. The filming of this biopic beginning of the year already completed, causing a release in 2015 is as good as certain.

67. Lost City of Z (Maria:Â I think they are as hopeful as us)
Of? James Gray (The Immigrant, We Own the Night)
With? Benedict Cumberbatch, Robert Pattinson
Why? The Lost City of Z is James Gray’s successor on the different reactions received The Immigrant last year. His latest is a true adventure film about the British explorer Percy Fawcett, who in 1925 went to Brazil together with his son, looking for the legendary city of El Dorado. But instead of returning with gold bake the pair disappeared for good. Benedict Cumberbatch step into the shoes of Fawcett, while Robert Pattinson plays a role, though it is not clear whether it is that of the son [Maria:Â research is important – we know he’s Henry Costin not the son). Pattinson recently showed that the recordings for the umpteenth time that he was delayed and the wait is tired. The commencement is now scheduled in January.”
94. The Childhood of A Leader (Maria:Â Fingers crossed)
Of? Brady Corbet (directing debut)
With? Robert Pattinson, Tim Roth, Stacy Martin, Bérénice Bejo
Why? Brady Corbet is one of our favorite noble strangers here at The observants. Outside flawless starring roles in movies like Simon Killer and Funny Games US to see the actor too often in supporting roles creepy. But thanks to its collaboration with famous directors he apparently made nice contacts, because the cast for his directorial debut contains more than intriguing names. Robert Pattinson is the surprise of them, but after his performances in films such as The Rover and Maps to the Stars, no one can deny that the Twilight -star can really act. The title tells us the time being the only thing we know about the film, we take a look at the childhood of a post-WW1 leader. Or The Childhood Of A Leader successful dish will be we do not know yet, but all the ingredients are there already.

“11. Maps to the Stars
The great filmmaker David Cronenberg has reunited with his Cosmopolis star Robert Pattinson for this searing portrait of Hollywood’s dark, narcissistic underbelly. It follows the Weiss Family, an archetypal Tinseltown clan led by Dr. Stafford Weiss (John Cusack), a TV psychologist and self-help guru, and includes his 13-year-old child star son Benjie (Evan Bird), who went to rehab at 9; their scarred, pyromaniac daughter Agatha (Mia Wasikowska) who takes a job as an assistant to a fading star (Julianne Moore) and falls for a limo driver/aspiring actor named Jerome (Pattinson); and Olivia (Olivia Williams), a hands-on stage mom to Benjie. Moore won the Best Actress award at Cannes for her performance.”
“64. Life
Not to be confused with the 1999 Eddie Murphy/Martin Lawrence race relations comedy of the same name, this drama is directed by Anton Corbijn (Control), and centers on Life magazine photographer Dennis Stock (Robert Pattinson) who’s assigned to trail and photograph reclusive movie star James Dean (Dane DeHaan). The film also stars Joel Edgerton, Ben Kingsley, Kristen Hager, and Kelly McCreary.”
The Playlist (100 Most Anticipated Films):
“8. “Queen of the Desertâ€
Director: Werner Herzog (“Grizzly Man,” “Fitzcarraldo“)
Cast: Nicole Kidman, James Franco, Robert Pattinson, Damian Lewis
Synopsis: A biopic of Gertrude Bell, a British explorer, archaeologist, writer, political attaché and general adventuress who played a major role in establishing the modern state of Iraq.
What You Need To Know: Last summer, we predicted we’d see ‘Queen’ at one of the fall film festivals, but that was overly optimistic, as the film ran into “technical issues†in advance of Telluride and TIFF. We’re still waiting with bated breath though, for Herzog’s starriest and biggest pic to date, which he also wrote. Producer Cassian Elwes has tweeted raves about it, and Herzog himself even told us just how great Nicole Kidman is in the lead role. While it missed out on awards consideration this year, it just might find some traction in 2015. It’s got all the earmarks of a fantastic, Middle Eastern epic, and the female lead makes it all the more original. The true story biopic is a genre Herzog has nailed before, eliciting memorable performances from his leads, so we can’t wait to see what he will do with this cast and this grand a story.
Release Date: TBD 2015
19. “Lifeâ€
Director: Anton Corbijn (“A Most Wanted Man,†“The Americanâ€)
Cast: Robert Pattinson, Dane DeHaan, Joel Edgerton, Ben Kingsley
Synopsis: Photographer Dennis Stock accepts a new assignment for Life Magazine to take pictures of rising star James Dean. The two became close friends as a result.
What You Need To Know: Everything about this picture sounds promising except its shoddy title (we’re half-hoping it gets nixed last minute for something, anything, else). We’ve been fans of Corbijn’s work ever since his 2007 debut “Control,†in which he already proved his mettle with the tricky biopic genre. Now, after his continuously excellent, if slightly more subdued, work in “The American†and last year’s “A Most Wanted Man,†Corbijn is set to tackle the biopic again. What gives us even more hope this time around is that this is a world Corbijn knows all too well, since he started off his own career as a music photographer. And he’s got a great cast to boot, with Pattinson already successfully shedding his post-“Twilight” glitter for “The Rover†and “Maps to the Stars.†We’d also be lying if we said we weren’t curious to see how DeHaan is going to pull off Dean.
Release Date: September 25th in the UK, but we’re not sure on an official date Stateside. Expect a Cannes premiere. “
“Also special pour one out mention for Olivier Assayas’ “Idol’s Eye†starring Robert De Niro, Robert Pattinson and Rachel Weisz. The project was canceled right as it was about to shoot which is a huge bummer because it would have easily cracked our top 15. Maybe it’ll come together in some shape or form down the line one day.” Fingers crossed.
It also mentions Harmony Korine’s The Trap but Rob still hasn’t been confirmed for this Korine film even though he did allude to a gangster film during Cannes I think. But if you go and watch Rob’s interview at TIFF with Scene Creek he says he is apparently doing a film with Harmony but “he’s still waiting on what that is” (it’s at about 3.19) so maybe it’s something else Harmony decided to write for him. I guess we will know some time soon since it’s supposed to film mid 2015.

What We’ve Seen & Recommend:Â “Maps to the Stars” (dir. David Cronenberg, February 27)
Julianne Moore is hysterically good as a deluded, washed-up, pill-swilling Hollywood has-been in Cronenberg’s angry, messy, sick but often brilliant tragicomedy. The arrival of a schizophrenic burn victim (played by Mia Wasikowska) turns this world of this world of Tinseltown dreamers upside down, featuring solid performances from John Cusack, Olivia Williams and Robert Pattinson”

“64. Queen of the Desert
Director: Werner Herzog // Writer: Werner Herzog
One of the most prominent members of the New German Wave happens to be Werner Herzog, an auteur who has remained a vibrant cinematic icon going on five decades. Lately working almost exclusively in documentary (and starring as a villain in 2012’s Jack Reacher), Herzog returns with his first feature since his pair of bizarre 2009 titles, Queen of the Desert. Starring a heady, glitzy cast made up of Nicole Kidman, James Franco, and Robert Pattinson, the film is a chronicle of Gertrude Bell’s life, a traveler, writer, archaeologist, explorer, cartographer, and political attaché for the British Empire at the dawn of the twentieth century.
Cast: Nicole Kidman, James Franco, Robert Pattinson, Jenny Agutter
Producers: Benaroya Pictures’ Michael Benaroya (Hateship Loveship), Cassian Elwes (Reach Me), Nick N. Raslan (Rescue Dawn), Mark Burg (Ain’t Them Bodies Saints).
U.S. Distributor: Rights available
Release Date: While many had hoped Herzog would have the title ready for late 2014, we’re guessing he’s avoiding the rush to make an appearance with the title at Cannes.”

The Guardian (Australia – The 88 Movies We’re Most Excited About):

James Dean’s friendship with Life photographer Dennis Stock is the subject of the new film from Anton Corbijn (himself a photographer). Dane DeHaan plays Dean, and Robert Pattinson is the snapper; a September release is planned for the UK.”
“Queen of the Desert
Nicole Kidman is Gertrude Bell, Robert Pattinson TE Lawrence, Damien Lewis and James Franco bring up the rear; Werner Herzog’s first biopic since Grizzly Man looks set for a Telluride/Toronto debut.”
Huff Post Entertainment (The Year Ahead: 2015 Movies Just Slightly Off the Beaten Path):
“Queen of the Desert (Werner Herzog): Legendary German director Herzog is teaming up with Nicole Kidman to bring the story of Gertrude Bell to the screen. Don’t know who Gertrude Bell is? Google her. She had a life in politics and international relations that would have been considered monumental were she a man. Oh, and she also climbed mountains.”
“Life (Anton Corbijn): Corbijn’s A Most Wanted Man (2014) proved to be a worthy finale for Philip Seymour Hoffman. Now, he has Dane DeHaan (the best thing about Kill Your Darlings) and Robert Pattinson (as good a young actor as there is today) in a movie about Life photographer Dennis Stock and James Dean.”
Ioncinema (Top 100 Most Anticipated Foreign Films #35 The Childhood of A Leader
“35 Childhood of A Leader
Director: Brady Corbet // Writers: Brady Corbet, Mona Fastvold
Working with the likes of Bonello, Östlund, Assayas, Hansen-Løve and Baumbach, when you count the 2014 festival release year alone, actor Brady Corbet (Mysterious Skin; Funny Games U.S.; Simon Killer) has built quite the impressive resume working with the auteur set. While The Childhood of a Leader is his feature length directing debut, this counts as back to back years working in the filmmaker capacity when you take into account his writing creds in Mona Fastvold’s overlooked ’14 title, The Sleepwalker, and the soon to be premiered Sundance short Rabbit, by filmmaker Laure De Clermont-Tonnerre. Initially announced as starring Juliette Binoche (Corbet’s co-star from Clouds of Sils Maria), she was later replaced by Berenice Bejo. It goes without saying that most of the attention will be placed on Robert Pattinson, continuing his tour of difficult, auteur driven and inspired cinematic projects, but Corbet also nabs Tim Roth and Nymphomaniac star Stacy Martin in the lineup. Set in 1919, this story tells the tale of a ‘would-be-fascist,’ and the screenplay is inspired by a wide range of authorial pillars, from John Fowls to Jean-Paul Sarte with a bit of Volker Schlondorff’s 1966 classic Young Torless (which also served as a point of comparison for Haneke’s The White Ribbon). The film has been described as partially about a family that relocates to France for the Paris Peace Conference and about the events leading up to the Treaty of Versailles. Early descriptions of the film also point to elements of horror.
Cast: Robert Pattinson, Berenice Bejo, Stacy Martin, Tim Roth
Producers: Brady Corbet, Chris Coen (Jane Got a Gun), Helena Danielsson (Call Girl), Antoine de Clermont-Tonnerre (Salvo)
U.S. Distributor: Rights Available.
Release Date: With filming set for this January, the Venice Film Fest organizers must be eagerly awaiting a chance at showcasing this film.”

Why We’re Excited: Portraying British explorer and political officer Gertrude Bell in the upcoming epic biopic “Queen of the Desert” from Werner Herzog is exactly the type of challenge that actress Nicole Kidman needs after the less-than-stellar “Grace of Monaco.” What’s more is that it will be interesting to see what Robert Pattinson brings to his portrayal of the iconic T.E. Lawrence a.k.a. Lawrence of Arabia — a character that most cinephiles associate with the late Peter O’Toole.”

With rumors that it would arrive last year, the wait continues for Werner Herzog’s first narrative feature in half-a-decade, the story of legendary cartographer Gertrude Bell may be hitting theaters this year. Led by Nicole Kidman, Robert Pattinson, James Franco, and Damian Lewis, Queen of the Desert follows Bell, a diplomatic explorer, who negotiated with Arab nations and helped establish the countries of Iraq and Jordan. Considering that Herzog is the man who gave us such epics as Fitzcarraldo and Aguirre, we’re looking forward to a return with what looks to be his most visually ambitious work in some time. 21. The Trap (Harmony Korine)
After the success of Spring Breakers, Harmony Korine is ready to dive right into his next, “most ambitious†project yet. While little is known about The Trap, we do know that it will likely star Jamie Foxx, Robert Pattinson, and Benicio del Toro in a revenge, gangster drama that follows a “multi-generational family of criminals in the South.â€Â Korine is set to begin shooting the film in Miami in the coming months. With Spring Breakers introducing Korine to a wider audience than ever before, could The Trap be his next big step into the cultural spotlight? – Dan G. 98. Life (Anton Corbijn)
After premiering his latest drama, A Most Wanted Man, at Sundance last year, we thought director Anton Corbijn might return to Park City, but barring any last-minute announcements that looks to not be the case. Hopefully coming later this year, as scripted by Luke Davies, Life centers on the relationship between James Dean (Dane DeHaan) and Life Magazine‘s Dennis Stock (Robert Pattinson), the latter of whom had been tasked with capturing the up-and-coming actor less than a year before his rise to stardom and tragic death. – Jordan R.“

““Queen of the Desert”
Synopsis: A chronicle of the fascinating life and tempestuous loves of Gertrude Bell, a novelist, historian, explorer, archaeologist and political attache with the British Secret Service who helped redraw the map of the Middle East in the wake of the First World War.
What You Need To Know: For the last few years, Werner Herzog has been more occupied with documentary than narrative features (outside of gamely hamming it up as the “Jack Reacher” villain), and we can’t urge you enough to check out his “On Death Row” series if you haven’t already. Still, any return to fiction would be big news for diehard, follow-him-to-the-ends-of-the-earth fans like us, even if it did not feature the biggest, starriest cast Herzog has ever worked with (Nicole Kidman, James Franco, Robert Pattinson, Damien Lewis and Jenny Agutter) animating an irresistible story of the pioneer spirit that unusually for Herzog this time resides in a female protagonist. Which could provide the kind of dramatic real-life heroine role for Kidman that will expunge the the awful “Grace of Monaco” from our memories.”
“Life”
Synopsis:Â The story of ambitious Hollywood photographer Dennis Stock, who pitches a series of photographs for LIFE magazine featuring then rising star James Dean, resulting in some of the most iconic and endlessly reproduced images of all time.
What You Need To Know: The second big Berlin title after “Queen of the Desert“ to feature Robert Pattinson, in a bigger role here as the photographer Stock alongside Dane DeHaan as Dean, Anton Corbijn’s fourth film is his most ambitious. The director has steadily and quietly become a favorite of ours with his meticulous, unshowy but elegant style of filmmaking, but this feels like a broader canvas than he’s worked with before —it’s a period piece (though admittedly so was his debut, “Control“) and one that will find him tackling one of the great icons of the 20th century, all set to a score by Owen Pallett who did such great work with Arcade Fire on Spike Jonze‘s “Her.” But it may also be very personal —Corbijn  is responsible for some potent image-building in the famous photographs he used to take of rock bands, as anyone who’s seen “Anton Corbijn Inside Out” can attest, and surely has a very specific perspective on this story.”

Thanks so much for putting this together Maria. So excited for Rob’s upcoming films – cannot wait 🙂
Always a fountain of wonderful information Maria. Thank you so much.
I am still wondering why Queen is taking so long to get us. I will take these critic’s lead and
‘In Herzog I trust’
@Carmel my guess is that they had to do some re-editing after they got reactions from the screening they did last year.
@Maria – I would think so too. I wonder how wise it is to take a Herzog film to a main stream North American screening. I wouldn’t have thought that would be the target audience – unless they are angling for awards? I do hope this means Queen will get a wider release.
BTW – LOVE your gif choice for this post
Thanks @Carmel re gif. I loved that little backstory of Edward
On my birthday! I just hope Italy will be included on that release date…. fingers crossed!
Bugger me – you’ve really done your research, Maria. Hat’s off to your extraordinary dedication in compiling this list for us to digest in one easy-to-read post. Seriously, thank you. I doubt I’d have the patience to sift through all of this stuff! Oh, and I’m with Carmel and your good self on the gif – I think this was my favourite section of that movie and still think it warrants its own feature-length film as a fascinating backstory.
This post is FANTASTIC Maria, thank you so much once again for all your hard work in putting it together for us. Loving all the excitement for Rob’s upcoming films, 2015 is going to be such a amazing year, so excited. Love your gif choice so much too, that little part of Edward’s backstory was great.
Maria, you are amazing. Thank you for posting this amazing and comprehensive list for us, it’s a joy to read. Your hard work is very much appreciated. 😀 😀 😀
