Hmm Rob I know how could I go past this article by Jonathan Sullivan of The Film Stage when he introduces it with:
“I’m going to just get this right out in the open: I don’t hate Robert Pattinson. Sure, the Twilight franchise is wretched, but that’s more the material than the person and his other roles (Remember Me, the upcoming Water for Elephants) prove that he isn’t just a pretty boy who is going to ride the coattails of a beloved franchise; this man wants to actually try.”
See seriously how could I not continue to read or post. Â Jonathan then goes on to say:
“Cosmopolis takes over the course of one day in the year 2000 and follows young Eric Packer, a financial wizard who is taking his fancy limousine out to go get a haircut and is prepping to risk his entire fortune on betting against the rise of the Japanese yen. He keeps getting sidetracked though, as he runs into a protest, a presidential visit, and a rapper’s funeral which keeps traffic at a stand still. During this time, he indulges in sadistic and voyeuristic thoughts and waxes philosophic about the state of the country from the back of his limo. In layman’s terms, the guy’s kind of a douchebag. Pattinson will be playing this character …
See that sounds great…for a novel. As for a movie, I don’t know if it will translate as well since what I’ve read up on it makes it sound like the main character just sits in his limo and does a bunch of monologues about assorted things. But then again, Cronenberg isn’t a horrible director and I’ve got faith in his vision; not only is he directing the movie, he’s also written the script for it so he’s got to have something invested in the material. What I also like is that Pattinson didn’t take this movie for the money or the glory; instead, he signed on because he admires not only the work of the director, but Don DeLillo‘s novels as well. It’s reasons like those that keep me rooting for the pretty boy vampire; I just hope Cosmopolis gives him the chance to shine.”
Oh Jonathan you are a prince!
And to give you some background that I haven’t mentioned in previous Cosmopolis posts.  David Cronenberg has been trying to make this movie since 2009, so it’s not something new.  Colin Farrell signed on in May 2010 and so although I thought it was insane that they were remaking  Total Recall, I am now very happy that that is going ahead lol.  Although it’s going to be pretty hard to not think of Arnie if I ever see that remake.  I found this info whilst snooping around IMDbPro yesterday, but got a little sidetracked.
This Sullivan guy’s writing is very refreshing, honest and he obviously knows the biz.
Thanks for the article Maria, it’s totally made my day.
*writes Johnathon* at the top of my Christmas list for this year.
*claps hands* I love reading all these articles about Cosmopolis & hearing more about the plot. Big thumbs up to you Jonathan. So nice to read an article where the writer speaks the truth & acknowledges Rob’s talent. Rob deserves all the praise in the world. Thanks so much for posting Maria. This week has been amazing – so much excitement. 2011 is off to an amazing start & is only going to get better & better 😀
Oh Jonathan you had me at “The twilight franchise is wretched ,but thats more the material than the person” Such a great read Maria Thanks for posting.
Really enjoyed reading this. Thanks Maria.
This soothes my soul. So nice to see some positive press for Rob and someone who recognises what we have known all along. Rob is soooo much more than just a pretty face. He is intelligent beyond his years and is making some very smart decisions for his career.
Very interesting analysis. I love his last words about Rob. Little by little those who care to notice are realising that Rob is serious about his career and is not interested in being a “diva” and a “celebrity”. Don’t worry Rob you will win them all one at a time…
This is a very refreshing article. Honest and intelligent. I suspect the tide might be on the turn.
And I can’t resist a little editing for my own selfish purposes – I, too am ‘rooting for the pretty ‘
(he don,t do it for money )i like this gay so much and all this nice talk about him is so good for his work its his year i know that a big one to thank Maria for it
