I saw on boxofficemojo today that Remember Me opened in Russia with USD1.8 million (290 screens). As of Monday, after 2 weeks, we finally cracked AUD1,000,163 (USD916,941 at today’s conversion / 174 screens) according to Urban Cinefile.  I understand that Russia has a population of 144.8 million compared to our 22.1 million – well Moscow alone has a population of 10 million. but it’s still slightly embarassing right? Yes, well sorry I didn’t mean this to turn out to be a geography lesson, but I think my point is – are there really only that many of us out there that want to see Rob? I’m a little perplexed. I mean I know Twihards spent $16 million on opening weekend for New Moon in Australia (Urban Cinefile archive) – could they really not handle seeing Rob as someone other than Edward? Well then to all the people who ask us time and time again “when is Rob coming” “please get Rob to come for an Eclipse premiere”, “can you please do a petition for Rob to come to Australia” and the classic I love “make Rob come to Australia” (yep sure because I have so much control over him) – I think you now have your answers as to why maybe we haven’t seen him here – just saying. Oh and Vertigo you are right – at least we won’t get trampled if and when he ever ventures downunder. Seriously if you haven’t seen Remember Me and have reservations about seeing Rob in another role – do yourselves an enormous favour and go see him in his best performance to date because believe me – Edward is on the road to retirement and there is so much more to Rob than that role.
Note: Okay I’m just going to add that is it a conspiracy by cinemas in Australia to not see this film succeed? What the hell is the 10 am sessions only or the 3.00 pm sessions and no evening sessions in most cinemas? Really who do you think this movie is catered too? Ugh am so freakin disappointed it’s not funny.
I saw it twice – first and second Fridays. First Friday there were 10 people in the cinema. Second Friday there were 4 of us. I don’t get it. It’s one of the best films I’ve seen in a very long time and Rob was so good in it. It was great seeing him as something other than Edward and amazing to see that he really CAN act REALLY WELL!
Very disappointing Australia.
Seriously Australia, what the hell is wrong with you. So so disappointing. I just do not understand why people are not going along to see this brilliant film. So many claim to be Rob fans but where the hell are you?? Seems to me that the majority are only Rob fans when he is playing Edward Cullen. So wrong people, so so wrong. There is so much more to Rob than Edward & those who cannot see that just have no idea what they are missing out on. As we have said countless times before, Rob is just beyond words brilliant in this role – definitely his best to date. You are missing out on something very special by not seeing this film.
I am beginning to think the same about the conspiracy Maria. My dumb cinema will not screen it, they put on every single other freakin’ movie but RM is always just a straight out NO whenever I ask. *shakes head* Something seriously seriously wrong with these people.
EXACTLY! Im an Aussie and I have seen it 3times to support it, I love it sooo much! Rob is perfection as Tyler and Emilie, Ruby, oh…the whole cast is amazing. Australia WHAT THE HECK IS WRONG!? All you so called “fans” of Rob here clearly only love him as Edward, thats all I can say. If you want him to visit here like you say you do it would be logical to support ALL his films. You all wonder why he hasnt come out here yet, well maybe he would if there was more support. At least I know I have done all that I can for RM, and it deserves it…its such a great movie. I love you Rob. xxx
It will be no.3 session for me on Saturday.
All good points Maria, especially the 10am and 3pm sessions. From what I remember of the majority of the crowd I saw in the cinema, they were not teens who wagged school to watch a movie. They mostly resembled working people seeing a movie at the end of the day.
And why the hell don’t they screen it in places where there is probably a demand? How do they know? I don’t recall Michelle and Robbie ever having to do a survey on how many people are interested in their area. All Aussies should have the opportunity to go and see a movie when they want to!
The embarrassing one million is a combo of two things – bad business and Edward fans just can’t handle Rob in any other role, hence we may never see Rob grace our shores. If by some miracle he does finally make it, at least we’ll have less elbowing to deal with.
p.s. How can people not be curious to see Rob’s acting chops as another character? I guess it’s becoming more evident, the tumbleweeds are moving along now.
p.s. which makes room for the good stuff. Rob shine on honey!
I’ve seen Remember Me and have to agree with you, he was excellent in that. Was pleasantly surprised the movie is actually quite good 🙂
p.s. again (sorry)
I think that even though there may seem to be fewer Rob supporters than imagined, we will see Rob slowly build on numbers as a very different (quality) crowd start to stand up and take notice. There are actually people out there who have never actually heard of Twi. I know, I’ve met them.
Am back from my Robsulation *shakes fist at damn computer* and agree the figures are disappointing and Vertigo I think you got it in one….bad business and Edward fans. Marketing for this film was just appalling in Oz and this is directly affecting the attendace. Well everyone elses loss I say as this movie is amazing! You know someone said to me today, yeah but you are a Robert Pattinson fan so you are biased but you know what….even if Rob wasn’t in this I would still say it is amazing movie and rave about it to everyone I meet. Love Rob (um der….) but I also really LOVE this film.
Girls we could talk till we are all blue in the face but these twihards will never get it. They only want to see Rob as edward and when he is no longer edward they will all move on to the next Heart throb for want of a better word They all need to build a bridge and get the F over themselves.
True Maria, I wanted to go and see the movie last night, so couple of days earlier looked up times online – and what have I found: 10.00am and 2 or 3.00 pm screenings-it was very frustrating. I only found one cinema on the whole of Gold Coast that did a 6.30pm screening. So guess what, people that work can not see it, can they?
Loved the movie again, not many people there maybe another 10 beside me and my frined. One good thing – we do have a convert: my previously “uneducated” friend 😉
i adore this movie, it just gets better everytime I see it – so far 3 times, I will keep going as long as it’s on.
In Melbourne you can still catch it at Hoyts & Village at night.
I have only seen it at 4pm sessions – nobody there, well maybe 20 people, mix of oldies, teens, guys.
And woohoo I finally get to see Little Ashes saturday.
Really disappointed my local classic theatre didn’t screen RM – it suits the audience there far more than the big chains, and Classic members go and see anything more real like this.
Boy I’m disappointed in how Oz is treating his films, LA we finally get – is that because it won a GLAD award or due to this site?
How To Be – we never got.
RM – I expected at least a bit of promo featuring Emilie!
Hey @kespax – Little Ashes I don’t think we can take all the credit for it since we are working with Paul Brennan who is a marketing genius. As for How To Be – it’s only ever been screened in Sydney and that was this time last year because Cilla, the original owner of RPAU, actually held it. If you want to send us an email with the details of the classic theatre near you that might be interested, I can speak to the distributors of HTB and see if they are able to get a screening with that cinema. No promises, but we can try.
Oh, here, here, Maria! Come ON Australia. We are a LONG way from anywhere so to get anyone to come Down Under, we need to support them in the first place.
By the time RM gets to our town, will I be the only one frequenting the cinema day in day out for a week?!
Ok, FINALLY someone from my class reported she went to see it and took a friend (am still working on the rest of them). Anyway, amd happy to say she loved it and had ALL good things to say about the movie and mainly Rob. Then came the chemistry with Ruby and the rest of the cast. The only thing she couldn’t comprehend and disagreed on was the ending, so after relentless discussion, she finally got it and changed her tune. 🙂
Excellent work Vertigo 🙂 So so good to hear some more positive feeback – very smart people. I just got back from my screening & there was only myself & 2 others there which was disappointing but I’d say it was probably due to the session being at midday. Once again just completely mesmerised by Rob’s brilliant performance. Cannot put into words how much I love this film. Such a powerful story. Really no words strong enough to express how wonderful it is. As I have said before, this story will truly stay with me forever.
I feel your pain Robbie, I really do. Any more progress with your cinema? Mine is still just saying a flat out no but am not going to stop asking. Launceston is the only major city in Tasmania that RM is not playing at. It is just NOT good enough. This brilliant film deserves to be screened everywhere, just so wrong that it is not.
“Marketing for this film was just appalling in Oz and this is directly affecting the attendace”
I absolutley agree with you and added to that Margaret Pomeranz from the “Movie Show” did not rate it very highly (stupid woman) David ? on the other hand was slightly more generous and gave it a ‘3’.
This result is such a shame not only for the powerful RM but also anyone who wants to get a movie of substance made. It’s this type of story that the industry in Australia used to thrive on.
Leaving the Rob factor out of it: What has happened?
Their is the Johnny Depp factor and I’m sure Alice is drawing much of the dollars. People only have a finite amount of money to spend at the movies. But I still feel much of the blame must go to the promotion or lack there of.
Such a shame. Luckily other countries are doing better.
I agree that Remember Me didn’t get as much recognition as it should have. The cinemas closest to me still haven’t screened it yet! I had to travel from my NSW/VIC border town to Melbourne to see it, which is appalling! I watched it at Crown’s 3pm screening and absolutely loved it! The next day I convinced my friend to see it. Well, she liked it just as much as I did! Movies of this sort are so hard to come by these days, it’s a shame it wasn’t publicised more.
The ending was so surreal though. I didn’t see it coming at all! And because of this film, it seems so much more real to me now! Maybe that’s because we get acquainted with the characters and that kind of makes us realise the extent of those events. (Eh, I’m trying not to give it away!)
But I love the chemistry between Rob and Ruby! Ruby is such a terrific actress. I can see her going far 🙂
On the upside, my friend, who isn’t into the Twilight hype (Yet. She has the books but hasn’t read them. She won’t see the films until she reads the books) finally admitted she has no problem with Rob! 😀 She scored some major brownie points!
